There's no doubt, it's a beautiful picture, although the sun still is visible as you say. I don't think it's really a disturbing element, maybe it would have been appropriate not to center it. But this is very personal. The fact is that the colours, the reflections and the overall atmosphere are superb!

Hi Paul

Nice to see you are getting some miles again and that you are exploring such lovely places for your photos :) Big congrats on your new camera (although i personally would have waited for the newer version of the 5D and seen then...i was very busy and i didn't get a chance to reply on the forum in time...sorry) Anyway, i think this is a good solid body, capable of doing all sorts of photos, not only landscape.

Back to this beautiful sunset now :)
I love all the tones and layers of colors here. It's always very difficult to get them and the exposure right when shooting a single exposure towards the sun, but you handled it superbly here.
Composition-wise, these shots are never perfect though: the place is so beautiful when seeing with your own eyes, that there is simply no camera and/or lens invented yet to capture the scene just like that. So don't worry, this is not a criticism to you :)
I think you did well to go for a landscape format here and get the entire length of the amazing clouds here. Although i would have probably wanted to see just a bit more FG, the last think i would have wanted to see would have been those lovely clouds cut or not included totally in the frame...so that's what i meant when i said no compo will be enough here :))
Speaking now about what we have here, i think that the bright patch in the FG is actually the kicker. That small area where the direct sunlight is reflected is what sets this shot apart and turns it from just good to great.
Other than that, the silhouette of the trees on the horizon are wonderful, the reflection is outstanding and the POV (with the slightly off-centered sun) is terrific.

I don't need to critique your shot, you're doing it yourself and are a little hard! This is a beauty, the silhouetted shoreline against the fantastic colours is dramatic and strong. It sure is a beautiful composition and the sun isn't disturbing, I like the burned effect it gives, the spotted blindness it is to look at it. Thanks once more!

I would find it interesting to have a contest to see who could post their "almost perfect" picture with exception of some major problem which would prevent it from being posted. This has been done on some DPreview magazine BLOGS I have seen...the reason I bring it up is that I find it hard to believe if you could even try to take a bad picture:-) I say that with a bit of humour included of course. We all take lousy images from time to time, but yours are sometimes hard to find words to explain how good they really are...sincerely!

Its always good to be critical of yourself as it makes you think more about what you are trying to achieve..But in this case the clouds cleared and your percieved moment didnt materialise...
The capture you did get though is completely stunning..The clouds are awesome and perfectly reflected in the mill pond calm water..The trees are a perfect band across the middle of the frame in a nice silhouette..And the sun itself is proper nice casting a little flare....I like this a lot!!

I actually don't find it distracting at all. The radiating glow that it creates, on the silhouetted trees below, is eyecatching.


A really beautiful sunset with warm colours, interesting silhouettes and fabulous reflections.

Perhaps a little shift to the left and a slight crop from the top would have improved the composition slightly but otherwise, perfect!

I love this shot, but it's also so different from your normal ones!I love the clouds and the sun part, buddy, and the reflection, too, along with the dark silhouettes of the trees, yonder!But the FG?I mean in the water I can see some...is it leaves, floating?It looks beautiful, or does it?I dunno, I love it, I hate it!

I rarely take sunsets but this one is outstanding - the dof is great and the colours really excellent. What makes this shot for me is the detail in the foreground, where the sun is glinting on the weeds just breaking surface.
