I would like to dedicate this to Pekka Valo for showing me and my Dad around Elmley Marsh and for letting me use his monster lens :-)

This is a very new species to me... before monday, I'd never seen one let alone photographed one! :-)
This Redshank kept getting mobbed and attacked by an Avocet nearby. As you can see in some of Pekka's shots, the Avocets are very aggressive and go for anything that wanders into their patch of water!

This was taken with Pekka's huuuuge Sigma 500mmm and a 1.4x converter :-)

I hope you like it!

Latin name
Tringa totanus

Family
Sandpipers and allies (Scolopacidae)

Overview
The redshank is a medium-sized wading bird. It has longish red legs and a long, straight bill. It is grey-brown above and whitish below. In flight, it shows very obvious white rear edges to the wings and a white 'V-shape' up its back. The greatest concentrations of breeding birds are in parts of Scotland and north-west England. In winter, as many as half of the birds in Britain may be from Iceland. The numbers breeding on farmland are declining, due to drainage of farmland. Overgrazing of coastal marshes is also removing breeding habitat and breeding birds are increasingly dependent on nature reserves.

Where to see them
The redshank is an abundant and widespread wading bird on coasts - look for it at RSPB coastal reserves. Inland, you can look for it at reserves where there is wet grassland for it breed and feed on, especially in the northern half of the UK.

When to see them
All year round

What they eat
Insects, earthworms, molluscs, crustaceans

*Apologies to anyone who critiqued my photo yesterday... I deleted it because I felt it wasn't good enough (it seemed alright after editing but then when on TN it had really bad quality for some reason)*

Hello Joe,
I haven't experience in shooting marsh birds. I think is very exciting and difficult. I like your photos such birds and this is very good, great light and sharpness.
Regards, Pawel

Tack sharp, awesome detail, great colour and the lighting is superb. A 500mm coupled with a 1.4x ...lucky you! The natural history value of this images is added to by the muddy foot and bill; it really shows in what conditions this bird is feeding. I like the way the background colours go well with the colouring of the bird.

Bonjour JOey, another great shot with a superb technic... holding such a monster! You managed to get a wonderful picture, with beautiful light and sharpness, a macro portrait of utmost interest! Thank you!

Francine

A full frame of natural earth tonal colours. The image is so well balanced! There is a super quality to the tonality and slight nuance changes....then of course a classic sharp spot on image from what one would think is a master in imagery, yet comes from a still yet young man...virtuoso!
Bob

Hello Joe
The sigma 500mm that Pekka kindly lent you is indeed a sharp lense and I see you used a tripod as Im guessing that its pretty heavy!!
The capture of the Redshank you have here is so sharp and well set its unbelievable that you took it with a convertor as well!!..Its no easy feat to have the confidence to use a borrowed lense and then get the best from it as you have here Joe.
I shall eat the Hat forthwith!!

Hi Joe,

Didn't take you any time to master the lens! Beautiful shot of this Redshank in a wonderful pose in the shallow water. I love the earthtone colors of the bird and the background. Superb details of his beautiful face with the wonderful eye and beak, and of the very intricate looking plummage. Excellent composition as always.

Sterling shot of this solitary bird with Pekka's powerful lens with you behind it, Joe.
Leave alone the bird, even the ripples in the water make this picture unbelievably life-like.

Hi Joe & good morning.
Excellent pose & POV, nice work at ISO 800. You've stopped the movement perfectly with sharp details. Very good color, exposure, comp, and PP with no hint of noise. Sounds like you had fun with that "monster", the "Bigma" has quite a reach with the 1.4x attached..
Well done!
