This fly was taken on the same thistle as the Meadow Brown i posted earlier this week. I have looked in my books but they are a bit limited on flies. The only one it looks like is a Snipe Fly . So any help would be greatful.

Well Thanks to Joey and Howard ( Gerbilratz )i now know this to be a Dance fly Empis tesselata. A small dark empid or assassin fly. seen April - July . Visits flowers for nectar but also catches other flies . these are somtimes carried in flight and then sucked dry using a long downward pointing proboscis. Body length 11mm.

Hola Nicolas.
Exelente el uso de la camara y lente pare lograr esta bella imagen de hermosos colores y fondo difuso, ademas la iluminacion permite observar finos detalles en el insecto y la flor.
Saludos Nicolas.

Hi Nick,

I don't know the ID of many bugs but there are so many good details and colors in this one that someone will positively identify it. A beautiful shot on the lovely thistle.

Hi Nicholas,
Wonderful exposure and focus...
Nice colourful shot.
Excellent details.tfs.
Best regards,
Siggi

Hello Nick
Im not sure what he is but I hope you had some insect repellent on as he looks though he could give you a nasty nip!!
Cracking capture though..The f9 you used was perfect here keeping the subject and thistle sharp and knocking out the bg to a lovely blur...Maybe just maybe the thistle head is a tad over exposed and a couple of stops of negative exposure would have taken the glare off of it...Just my opinion though.
Looks like rain here tommorrow..I hope its better with you.

I might've mistaken this for a wasp - your notes are very helpful. As for the photo, I love the way the fly is positioned. I think the DOF is perfect, and you know, what drew my attention are the bright colors. I tend to notice those. The thistle is beautiful as well, and the fly adds life and extra contrast.

The composition is helpful to me because I like the way everything is positioned - and it's a way for me to learn. Thank you for posting.

I see you have your share of thistle to attract. I am starting to think that thistle has much more importance than we think, both in nature and in symbology. It is kind of a miracle plant...although some places consider it otherwise...I wonder..Let me guess...if we decide that Thistle is noxious and then we apply some chemical to the weed to kill it because it might hurt our eyes or our cattle or horse, then what does that spray which is much more noxious do to the creatures which work on these plants...such as bees. And then why are we surprised when something happens to the honeybees...as if it were something other than us...as I said to another from an old Pogo comic strip..."We have met the enemy and it is us!"
