A big thanks to Ulla, Vinny, Gert and Paul for helping to identify this butterfly :-)

Here's some facts on butterflies:

1. Butterflies range in size from a tiny 1/8 inch to a huge almost 12 inches.

2. Butterflies can see red, green, and yellow.

3. Some people say that when the black bands on the Woolybear caterpillar are wide, a cold winter is coming.

4. The top butterfly flight speed is 12 miles per hour. Some moths can fly 25 miles per hour!

5. Monarch butterflies journey from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico, a distance of about 2,000 miles, and return to the north again in the spring.

6. Butterflies cannot fly if their body temperature is less than 86 degrees.

7. Representations of butterflies are seen in Egyptian frescoes at Thebes, which are 3,500 years old.

8. Antarctica is the only continent on which no Lepidoptera have been found.

9. There are about 24,000 species of butterflies. The moths are even more numerous: about 140,000 species of them were counted all over the world.

10. The Brimstone butterfly (Gonepterix rhamni) has the longest lifetime of the adult butterflies: 9-10 months.

11. Some Case Moth caterpillars (Psychidae) build a case around themselves that they always carry with them. It is made of silk and pieces of plants or soil.

12. The caterpillars of some Snout Moths (Pyralididae) live in or on water-plants.

13. The females of some moth species lack wings, all they can do to move is crawl.

14. The Morgan's Sphinx Moth from Madagascar has a proboscis (tube mouth) that is 12 to 14 inches long to get the nectar from the bottom of a 12 inch deep orchid discovered by Charles Darwin.

15. Some moths never eat anything as adults because they don't have mouths. They must live on the energy they stored as caterpillars.

16. Many butterflies can taste with their feet to find out whether the leaf they sit on is good to lay eggs on to be their caterpillars' food or not.

17. There are more types of insects in one tropical rain forest tree than there are in the entire state of Vermont.

18. In 1958 Entomologist W.G. Bruce published a list of Arthropod references in the Bible. The most frequently named bugs from the Bible are: Locust: 24, Moth: 11, Grasshopper: 10, Scorpion: 10, Caterpillar: 9, and Bee: 4.

19. Butterflies and insects have their skeletons on the outside of their bodies, called the exoskeleton. This protects the insect and keeps water inside their bodies so they don’t dry out.

Taken with my Sigma 180mm and a 1.4x converter, flash was done by my Canon 430EX Speedlite flashgun and an Omni-bounce flash diffuser.

The pose, POV and composition in this photo is amazing. Sharpness and details are excellent; light and colours perfect. The OOF BG and DOF are very beautiful. Another high quality photo!

Hi Joe

I'm not absolutely 100%, but I think it is Large Skipper - the two spots on the ends of the wings are the same orangey colour as the rest of the wing. On the Silver-spotted they tend to be a little paler. A shot of the underside would be the easiest way to confirm it.

BTW excellent shot with good detail of both butterfly and flower, and very well lit.

Great shot of your Large Skipper, and well done getting it on a flower. It's so hard to get Australian butterflies on a flower, especially a native flower.

If that is a large Skipper then I wonder if that is bull thistle which is also larger than standard/common thistle? fine close in ID. The insect has that sleek almost fighter jet appearance I have come to see in the Skipper.

Hi Joe,
i'm not here that often this but I saw this beauty when I stepped in.
It looks like a large skipper and you have captured very skilful. The sharpness and exposure are spot on and you have
balanced the flash with the natural light very well.
The DOF are also very good, almost the whole main subject is in focus and the BG in nice OOF. Lovely colours and a fine composition too.

Hi Joe. Have you had the rain as well today. The sharp ness in this close up is first class , with fine detail and rich colours. we can see all the hairs on the body. a good top POV. well done TFS.

I have just a gander at my Book and I would go with a large Skipper..But I am renowned at being wrong in my ID's so take that with a pinch of salt!!
What I can tell you in all honesty it is an absolutely superb capture...Its spot on in every aspect.
The hat I ate was a little bland..I think maybe it needed a little olive oil based dressing to lubricate the swallowing!!
As for Hats I know have to present to you a Crown...You are the Macro King in my reckoning!!

I can't help with ID because I'm in my work now. Skipper looks great with very detailed and colorfull wings. Good POV and composition with thistle. Natural light and BG are also nice. And of course interesting note!

Great POV and detail here. You were luck with its choice of perch as the purple of the thistle really helps bring out the colour of the butterfly.

I'm not a big expert on butterflies so i can't help much with the ID here.
However, i can tell you that this is a gorgeous macro and one very well calculated by you.
I like the way you've used the extarnal flash here, including the diffuser, in order to get just the right amount of light on your subject.
As a result, the details are excellent and the colors are lovely.
