Hello,

i was out walking along the cliff tops camera in hand the other evening, when this little chap started shadowing me in the long grasses and bushes beside me. I've had a good look for an ID for him/her and can find nothing. He/she was about the size of a Robin, if that helps?

If anyone knows the ID (which i'm sure is blantantly obvious), i'd be really grateful, thanks alot.

handheld and cropped.

UPDATE - Thank you Ulla, for the ID, i knew i could count on somebody here for the answer, and a quick one too!

So, this is a Stonechat!

From the RSPB website:

Latin name
Saxicola torquata

Family
Chats and thrushes (Turdidae)

Overview
Stonechats are robin sized birds. Males have striking black heads with white around the side of their neck, orange-red breasts and a mottled brown back. Females lack the male's black head, but have brown backs and an orange tinge to their chests. Birds are frequently seen flicking their wings while perched, often doing so on the tops of low bushes. As its name suggests, birds utter a sharp loud call that sound like two stones being tapped together. They breed in western and southern parts of the UK, but disperse more widely in winter. Although the species is not faring too badly in the UK, it is doing less well on the continent and is of European conservation concern, making it an Amber List species.

Where to see them
Heaths, conifer plantations or coastal sites, especially in southern and western counties.

When to see them
All year round

What they eat
Invertebrates, seeds and fruit (eg blackberries)

Thanks agains Ulla :o)

Hello Paul,
Nice to see a bird coming from you for a change! And this is a lovely capture of a beautiful little Stonechat in a lovely pose and against a fine smooth background. Excellent sharpness, good light and colours. Well done! This one is only a rare visitor to Sweden and we've seen it here a couple of times.

Hi Paul

Great work with this superb and also moody bird shot :)
Somehow you manage to incliude some of that terrific feeling your landscape have in your animal shots, too. I wonder...could you do it in macrcos, too? :)

Anyway, this is a gorgeous close-up - very sharp and well saturated in terms of color.
The OOF BG really brings the subject out superbly while the warm light on it makes all the tones even more vivid. The small catchlight in its eye is an excellent bonus for the composition, too.

Bravo and TFS

Strange name, but certainly common to Europe...and close to a European robin, as the ones we have here are much larger...I have seen many a small robin which Sir Nick has posted...so I know exactly what you mean. A rare capture. congrats!

Hallo Paul
What! No land or seascape?
A lovely capture and a great surprise to see this tiny litte birdie from your lens. A dainty little bird covered with an arrangement of dark coloured feathers. The flashback in the eye is super stuff. Sorry for shorter than usual comment. Time and the rat race is chasing me.
Best regards.

Hi Paul.
Simple and at the same time amazing scene with so beautiful bird. Lights and shadows are looked greatly. Despite the dark key of picture execution you managed to reflect all details and colour tones of the bird perfectly. Shot is composed and framed excellently too. Well done and TFS.
Alexei.

Hello Paul,
What a beautiful light in this photo. Just enough to bring the Stonechat alive. Wonderful. Great warm colours, also in the BG. Excellent sharpness, details and composition.

Hello Paul,
During my absence I have missed a great deal but this one of a male Stonechat caught my eye. I like the lighting, pose and POV. You caught him sharply too ans he looks good against the dark OOF BG.
I look forward to more bird shots from you, especially if they turn out to be as good as this one.
TFS and regards,
Ivan

Hey Paul,
This is a rare one from you.

The little birdie- the stone chat looks beautiful in this capture of yours but i have to say that it is the lighting and the mood created consequently that takes the cake away.

I like the way the the last rays of the evening sun luminates your subject softly but highlighting every little feature and the details on its plumage. The catchlight in its eyes are an addition. I love the placement of the subject to the left wherein at the near end the bird can be fully appreciated for its beauty while the Bg is a sombre yet warm combination of various shades of brown.Fine PoV and colours and contrasts.

Very impressive indeed.

TFS & Cheers
