Harlequin Ladybird larvae. (Harmonia axyridis)

The Harlequin Ladybird is also known as the Multicoloured Asian Ladybird and the Halloween Ladybird. It has a very variable appearance, making it difficult to tell apart from our native ladybirds!

This image is "as shot" not zoomed or heavily cropped like the previous upload was.

Harmonia axyridis is a new species to the UK. It has a voracious appetite and a longer breeding period than native species, there are fears it may compete against native species and exclude them from the natural habitats.

Originally from Japan, but was deliberately introduced into the USA and some mainland European countries as a biological control of aphids. First noted in England in 2004, likely imported on plants and cut flowers, could have even caught the train on the channel tunnel or just flew over from Sur le Continent!!!

The main food for both the larvae and adults are greenfly, blackfly, aphids, and other garden pests. Like most native ladybirds, it will eat other insects if its preferred prey is unavailable.

This one, shot in RAW, manual focus, ISO 100, Shutter speed set at 1/800 (reduced to 1/200 whilst using automatic flash)
F-stop f/20. Macro ring flash used as was remote shutter release and mirror locked.

I have a new Manfrotto Micropositioning sliding plate, mounted to the tripod and this gives finer control over the camera for tight macro shots. I have also adapted a small "plastic" bucket, mounted on the front of the macro light to act as both a light diffuser and wind shield... looks weird, but does help giving a more even light and give better control over the subject.

Hello Howard,
I often find Ladybirds but I've rarely come across the larva! This is a very fine macro of one showing details and colours pretty well. I like its pose on the leaf.
TFS and regards, Ulla

Hi Howard,

Interesting photo of this insectivorous larvae. The colors of the photo are very good and you captured in a great way the pattern colors and texture of the larvaes body.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian

salut Howard
je préfère celle-ci qui donne encore plus de détails. Le pov est excellent avec le recul nécessaire, bonne couleur.
