[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Common Mallow, Malva sylvestris. Common name, but having uncommon beauty. These plants tend to grow in abandoned and poor areas, waysides, roadsides and scrub land, and tend to be overlooked. They can become rough and straggly quite quick, so, best to get the flowers on young stems and firm clusters before they spoil.

These plants do get predated on by insects, and the flowers soon become damaged.

An erect to sprawling perennial, up to 1m tall. The flowers usually span between 2-5 cm across. They form conspicuous clusters, the leaves crinkly and ivy shaped.Other names are "Bread and Cheese", "Cheesecakes" and "Pick cheese" on the account of the flat round seeds that look like "little cheeses"!!!

This one was imaged, overcast sky, at the base of a hedge surrounded by tussock grass.

The cluster of buds can be seen in t/rh corner, the bloom starting at the base of the cluster.

This was taken in RAW, slight cropping and sizing before sharpening. No other PP work done.

This is one of the first plants I have imaged with the new camera set up - micro adjustable sliding plate, diffuser box, and macro light ring.

Tripod used, mirror lock, remote shutter release. manual focus (as always). Lens was adjusted to good focus, then locked. The fine adjustment to the focus was done using the micro-slide plate. This enables the camera to remain fixed and hopefully get sharper and more detailed images.

I am hoping this will be good practice until I obtain the Canon MP-E Macro lens.

Wow, Howard, we can tell you used all the skills and technicalities available to you, first by the great dof at such a close range, we see all the details and the tiny needles with so much sharpness. Yet the background is blurred and darker, letting room to the nice pink colour of the malva. Congratulations with your new set up, the lighting is superb too, perfect. I think you're going to post fantastic macro shots, I am looking forward the next ones!
