[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Firstly, I apologise for the BG. It's not how I would have chosen it, but these guys really like to be in the thick of brambles and low scrub. They are quite diffcult to approach, especially when the photographer has to step through the thick brambles to get to it. I observed a few of these on this patch. It's a considerable distance from water and on this isolated bramble patch (around 8 x 4 m) there were approximately 5 females and 1 male. The mature males has a blue abdomen, the females are as the picture I have posted.

The Broad-bodied Chaser (Libllula depressa) is a robust looking species. Observing it is interesting, it's abdomen "breathes" noticeably contracting and expanding to increase the flow of air through the spiricles. The abdomen contracts by around 25% and is most interesting to look at. The yellow colouration of the female and immature males make these appear like enormous wasps, in fact they are often mistakenly identified as hornets by the uneducated observer.

The Broad-bodied Chaser is a strong wanderer and they are often encountered feeding around hedgerows well away from water. What makes them group together on small patches of brambles, I have no idea.

I hope you like this one.

Wow Paul, this is an amazingly sharp image showing superb detail and colour. This shot was well worth your trip through the brambles and the background is blurry enough not to be a distraction. Very well done. Regards, Vicky

Lovely capture Paul. The details simply are amazing - especially in the wing bases. Excellent colours of this young female which will turn darker in her old days. I like the tight cropping/composition.

I am looking forward now to get my hands on a Canon EF 100 mm f/2.8 macro - can hardly wait after seein this picture;-).

Vivid details.!!!
Excelent shot and well done on the composition.
It's not the background that is the attention, it's the creature. If we want pretty backgrounds, let's go to the studio. LOL
take it as it is, which it is, AU NATUREL. LOL

Excelent work.

Mike

Extremely well composed, Paul. Details and colors are wonderful. I like this close view, attracting the eye on the beautiful design at the wings base. All other details are superb. Very well done.

Cracking clarity and sharpness Paul.
Very difficult to get these with a clean background. Well captured.

Simplesmente espectacular.
Eu sei o quão difícil é captar esses bicharocos, realmente são eléctricos
A focagem está óptima e as cores ainda melhores.
Parabéns ;)

Hi Paul,

I saw this picture on the trek homepage.
WOW what an incredable one. Super structure aand colours.
And above all I like the composition. It is not just straight forward what you see often on this site.
I was happy with my pictures bu after I saw yours...

Thanks,

Hendrik

Very nice, Paul! I am so impressed with the sharp detail in the wings. It really is tough sometimes getting into the brambles to get the best vantage-point for a great shot, but you seem to have a gift for it! Well done, as usual!

Hi Paul,
This is one of the most impressive macro shot I have ever seen.
The colors are great and the contrast between the yellow of the abdomen and the green background is very nice.
The sharpness is perfect and it is a pleasure to observe the details in the wings.
I also like the framing, which is focusing on most beautiful aspects of this special dragondfly.
Amicalement,
Michaël

Hi Paul,

Excellent sharpness and colours and a nice arangement. Very well done, thanks

Wow, I've just seen this on the Home Page. Can't believe I missed it! Magnificent colours, like honey. I like the chosen tight crop as it really draws you in to the detail of the inner wings (looks like stained glass!).
Brilliant, thanks for posting.
