White Bryony... Bryonia dioica... Poisonous!!!

Greenish-white flowers with five lobed leaves and coiled tendrils, darker veins and yellow anthers. They produce brilliant orange-red berries in winter. This charming plant is related to your cucumber family... but this is not a good one to eat..This is the only native species though, a lot of casual plants are found near human waste.. sewage farms etc...

Very poisonous, flowers can grow to 18mm across. Dioecious, male and female plants remain separate.

Symptoms of these poisonous plants include, digestive disturbance with acute diarrhoea, profuse urination, profuse sweating, respiratory difficulty, poor co-ordination, convulsions and occasionally cessation of defecation. Also animals are unwilling to move.... eeeuuuchh...!

The roots are especially dangerous and should be burnt. Cases of poisoning in horses has been reported.. So, don't have this one in your sarnies during the cricket season...

This particularly fine specimen, was found hidden in a Blackthorne hedge. In full shade, about 3 foot long, twisting it's tendrils towards the sky....on a limestone soil.

Exposure was difficult, using the camera with f/7.1 or less and the auto would require anything between 1.5 and 3 seconds to get a decent exposure.Movement was difficult to control due to strong wind. This plant was almost in the dark!!

ISO 100, shutter speed set to 1/320, but compensates and fires at 1/200 when using automatic macro ring light.F-stop ...f/32...

Other setting parameters resulted in either poor definition of the leaf veins or slight over-exposure of the outer leaves...

Is this in RAW too?Coz while it's a great shot in its own right, that satin/silk look is amiss!
But an awesome shot, my friend!

Hi Howard,
Very good detail/DOF, POV, color, and use of your flash helping to create a dark BG. There are two schools of thought, some say natural light is best for florals. But this is very nice too :)
Well done,
Howard

Hello Howard,
A great capture of a white Bryony flower, the DOF, POV and use of flash being first class to give us a sharp detailed view of this flower to show it in such a way that it becomes interesting.
TFS this fine image,
Ivan

Hi Howard,

Good note's, nice flower and good exposed wit lots of details.
Also good dof.

Gert

Hi Howard.
Very interesting shot, applied technique and impressive result. Flash light is used very well. Pictured subject is so attractive and POV is nice as well as the composition. Concerning exposure parameters I wish to say that I would used ISO 200 and a bit large aperture value. At so small aperture optic quality of the lens decreases and it is impossible to get crisp sharp image. In any case excellent work and experience. My best regards.
Alexei.
