You may think this is an unusual title for my posting , but I have descided to do a study on the disease which is known as Bumble Foot and affects Chaffinches in the New Forest .I have not seen this affecting any other species. As you can see from my picture this males right foot is very badly affected to the point where he is not using the rear claw to grip with . The left leg is also far from normal. I have decided to study them over a 12 month period and i will post my findings every two months.

Chaffinch ( Fringilla coelebs ) One of the commonest and most widespread birds in Britain, favouring a wide variety of habitats including gardens, parks and woodland. In winter numbers are boosted by the influx of north european birds. Song comprises a descending trill with a characteristic final flurish. Feeds mainly on Insects during the summer months but seeds in the winter where they often gather in large flocks

Hi Nick,

You will have to share the results of your study with us! Great view of the feet - what a shame. A beautiful Chaffinch - wonderful colors and excellent details. I love the look on his face - wonder what he is thinking.

Hello Nick,
A fine capture of a male Chaffinch, the swollen diseased foot clearly seen. The technical qualities are excellent and the pose and POV serve well to show all the features in this fine composition.
I didn't know about this disease. It would be interesting to know what you find out about it and whether the affected birds recover.
TFS this fine image,
Have a good weekend,
Ivan

hello sir,
Superb picture..the BG is wonderful, lovely colours in the bird.
I think sharpness could have been given a little more, but that doen't matter.
Lovely pic overall
TFS

Hello Nick
I wasnt aware of this disease until you pointed it out to me on one of my chaffinch shots.
I checked my pictures from the previous 2 years and it was not visible on any of the birds so I think its safe to say that it has been introduced recently.
I really look forward to your research and findings and if you want any info of the birds that visit my garden then please do ask if it will add to and help your study.
As for the picture it is superbly taken as always..I find the males varying colours are so difficult to capture but you have portrayed them perfectly here.
Paul

Hi Nick, excellent image of the bird, good details to the "bumble foot".. Is it similar to the virus on pigeons?..I have seen this on quite a few "town" birds...

The shot is up to your usual high standard... excellent colours and detail. regards h

Hello Nick,
Lovely capture of this Chaffinch but sad to see its handicap. You'll be doing a great job in keeping your eyes open and report what you see. Apart from its feet this is a very beautiful bird in good condition.
TFS and have a nice weekend, Ulla

Hi Nicholas!

This is why I like TN so much - this site is full of enthusiast who help us to open our eyes to every aspect of nature. Sad to see this little, cute bird with so deformed feet. Interesting note and observation.

Hello Nick,

Thats an very interesting study Nic. Is this a worldwide problem or only in the UK. I have never heard or read about this disease here in Holland. I'm curious about about your finding.

Back to your photo. A wonderful close-up from this bird. Nice natural colors. Sharp with a lot of fine details. Compo and POV are good. Nice BG.

Thanks for sharing. A lot of success.

Have a nice weekend and TFS BOB

Hi Nick,

Great capture of the pretty Chaffinch.
Nicely composed with a great POV and I like the pose with the head slightly turned down.
Lovely sharp details and nice natural colours with a superb OOF BG.
What a shame about the bumble foot, I've noticed it in some of your previous Chaffinch shots, I guess it becomes a real problem once the two feet are affected.

Hola My friend Nicolas.
Wow. Lovely colors and excellent pose of this beautiful little bird. Great image Nicolas.
Luis52.

Nick,

The photo itself is awesome with a fantastic use of natural light. I love the details, the sparkle in the eye, and the slight tilt of the head.

As far as this little one's feet are concerned - it's frightening to know something is affecting these lovely critters. I am interested in your study - and why it's affecting certain speices...

It is a beautiful Chaffinch Micholas. And what a shame about its leg.
It is all 'in focus'. Sharp, clear and colourful details - it's a winner for me

The disease - is it hereditary?

Nick, it wrenches my heart to see that this cute little bird is a victim of some disease that has deformed its feet really badly. Can't something be done about it if this has turned epidemic for Chaffinches in general?
As a picture, this is an outstanding work both technically and aesthetically. The clarity of the image is such that it enables the viewer to have a perfect impression of the deformed feet. Simultaneously, colours and details on the bird are beautiful beyond description.
I would remain interested in your study of this affliction and would be eager to look at your findings in the future.
Regards.
Ram

Nick, Poor bird. The pic is s beautiful that I did not even pay attention to the feet till I read your note. Hope you will be able to share more info on this disease later.

Hi Nick

This is a very fine image and clearly shows the disease (I have head it called Staphylococcal Arthritis as well). I have seen this in a domestic Budgie (not mine) here in Canada. There is no way she could have survived in the wild toward the end, so these little ones must have a tough time of it. Is there something in the environment that causes foot injuries there -- I understand that it enters through open wounds, particularly in their feet.

Very fine composition, colours and details

Hallo Nicholas
It is a pity that this stunning image are accompanied with information about this decease you have been studying. It is very clearly noticeable on the image and it is a sorrowful sight. It is like looking at a crippled human being. Chaffinches are great looking birds. You have taken a pretty nice photo of one. It stands well against the greenish background. Beautiful colours and fabulous lighting. Very sharp with great detail in the plumage. I like the position you have captured this one from the back, showing the feathers in all its glory. A superb shot of this elegant bird. Good focus and framing, presented in a delightful manner. I especially like the smooth feathers on the head. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
Anna
ps. A total different subject but with definite concern is the sorrowful sight of crocodiles dying in the Kruger National Park. If you have some time please go and read the note that accompanied the crocodile posting my husband Loot placed a few days ago. It is very alarming information that he shared with us.
