Great Willowherb,, Epilobium hirsutum.

One of the prettiest of wild flowers, soft pastel shades with fine lines and good definitions. These are becoming very abundant here, along hedgerows and waste ground. A good addition to the technicolour pallet of nature (bit deep that!!).anyway, enough of the waffle!!

A large family, the willowherbs, hairy plants, can be quite tall, lanceolate to elliptical leaves, sometimes toothed.

Solitary flowers, found in the axils of the stems and leaves, 4 sepals, 8-10mm across. stamen and style erect. The fruits are about 5cm long...

They flower from June to September, along riversides, banks, hedges and tall herb communities.

As a child, I was always lead to believe this plant was a "Canadian Fireweed", or "Blooming Sally"........any North American or Canadian members able to enlighten me would be a bonus...

Hello Howard,
very nice focus. perfectly done with great light and lovely colours (really natural).
Best regards
Siggi

"Blooming sally"...sounds like from Oscar Brands, "Bawdy Songs and Backroom Ballads".....Very nice colour. It has an Easter or perhaps better said a passion look to its colours..'That would refer to the Passion of the Christ of course...and then we have Passion flower which is much more Angelic but this will do just fine...very nice Howard!

Hello H
This is a cracking capture of Willow Herb..I would though question the use of a polarizer in this type of capture..The results from it are great but I cant see the benefits of using one..It would be nice if you had another capture without it and post it in the workshop...Super macro all the same.

Hi Howard,

nice pov and razor sharp.
What a beautiful wildflower, I don't reconize them not on this way.
Good work.

Hallo Howard
Lately you have placed some really colourful and great flower images, the most being unknown to me. This Great Willow herb is no exception. Your flower is beautifully displayed and presented. The colour is something special and I cannot really put my finger on what the name of the colour is, as it is a combination of cerise and dirty pink. It still remains very attractive and eye-catching. The details of the anthers are remarkable and very observant. In my opinion two things makes this image special. Firstly the visibility of the pollen dusts and secondly the display of the semi-opened flower buds. To me that is always a huge attraction on any floral photograph. Your green background also highlights the colour and details of the flower to a even greater extent. Thanks for sharing; I enjoyed this one al lot.
My best regards.
Anna

Hi Howard

Another excellent shot. Great detail and colour here. Excellent work.

The fireweed name comes from the blitz - but relates to Rosebay Willow herb - the plant took advantage of the bomb sites and grew in profusion. The seeds were popularly believed to have arrived on a shipment of timber from Canada - however, this is not true either, that relates to Canadian Fleabane (Conza Canadensis). I was told this story too when I was young, the whole thing is just a great muddle of bits and pieces.

Hello Howard,
A great capture of a single flower of the Great Willowherb, the use of flash contributing to fine colours and sharpness with just the right BG.
A beautiful portrait and thanks for sharing it,

Ivan
