Barn owl

This is a juvenile barn owl pictured sitting out in the hot sun we had on the weekend. He has still got a lot on downy fluff on his belly and maybe he was waiting for his mum to come and get him with a tasty snack.

Tyto alba
With heart shaped face, buff back and wings and pure white under parts the barn owl is a distinctive and much loved countryside bird. Widely distributed across the UK, and indeed the world, the bird has suffered declines over the past fifty years as a result of the degradation of once prey-rich habitats in the face of intensive agricultural practices. This decline, fortunately, has halted in many areas and the population may now be increasing.

Where does it live?
Breeding
Open country, especially farmland with barns, and coastal marshland
Wintering
Similar to breeding habitats

Where to see it
Open country, along field edges, riverbanks and roadside verges.

What does it eat?
Mice, voles and shrews

What does it sound like?
Screeching, wheezing and gurgling.
When to see it
All year round; during the day, but best at dusk.

I hope you like him.

He looks quite relaxed there sat in the sun...was talking to a chappie who is heavily involved in the conservation of Barn Owls the other day, and he reckons he'd be surprised to see them still in the wild in UK after about 20 years...that would be a sad thing to happen.

Excellent shot and well done on the composition and details.

Lovely shot Paul, the barn owl is becoming quite rare I believe. Did you capture this in the wild? Good use of fill-in flash you seem to use this on a lot of your shots. This is something I must use more often. Well done.

Sentinel on guard. Not very common picture - owl on blue BG in bright sunlight. Great pose, I'm not surprised that people in Middle Ages connected these owls with ghosts. Looks very ethereal. Superb post Paul!

Hello Paul!
Very nice shot.Lighting, colors, expression on face, framing and composition are perfect.
TFS...:-)

Hi Paul. This is perfectly exposed against the bright sky and a lovely composition. It's very sharp and detailed too, I like the downy fluff. I didn't know Barn Owls were around much in day but they were out a lot on Springwatch too. Wish I had a shot of one like this. Beautiful capture :)

Hi Paul, this young man his very beautiful. The POV is very good, it gives a nice play between light and shadow on his body with a very nice blue sky in background.
Well done
Guy
