For any prospective Knight I don't think you need rush, it's all to late. I kind of like Robber flies in one way because they are very good at what they do and we all like a predator. I'm more keen on Damsels and Dragonflies and when I saw this I took the side of the damselfly, but I was too late to save it.

There are 27 species of Robber flies in the UK and I don't know enough about them to make a certain ID on this one. The family that Robber flies belong to is called Asilidae. They are sturdy insects with strong brislty legs which end in feet that normally have 2 pads. A characteristic feature is the deep groove between the eyes.

Robber-flies feed on other insects and their strategy is one of sit and wait followed by plucking the prey from the air. They then use their horny proboscis to pierce the prey and suck out it juices. The dense 'beard' is thought to function and a protection for the eyes against struggling prey.

Notes are based on those found in "Field Guide to Insects" by M. Chinery.

I hope you like the image.

PS the damsel is common blue, I robbed it from the robber to see the ID...live by the sword...

Very sharp detail!
Fantastic colour!
Perfect composition!
Great shot!

Scary moment captured of this Robber fly attack Paul, you must spend a lot of time in the field to get these shots. My gallery's pretty static but these shots are so much harder to pull off. Amazing details and clarity, effective DOF, excellent light. I would give this 10 points!

Very good capture paul, it is well detailed, TFS

Excellent capture Paul,
really well captured, I too prefer damselflies to these shifty robber flies!
Well composed, good sharp detail and colour. Good DOF and POV.

I can't remember the last time I've seen not only a great macro shot, but also a dramatic capture of the wild and cruel insect world.
Well done on this one!

Great capture Paul! Poor damselfly... but Robber must eat to survive. Quality is as always great but most of all I like moment you've captured. Sad and scary but true face of nature.

Wonderful...Wonderful...
Such a wonderful occasion you have captured here. You must be a greatly involoved nature observer to find these things.
This one is great in POV and compo and is greatly detailed too.

Excellent details & sharpness, perfect composition and great colours.
Fantastic work!
Well done, Paul.

Ouch, but so well caught by you Paul.

You can almost hear this damselfly screaming for help - poor thing.
This is such a sharp image. The colours are magnificent.
Excellent composition.
Thanks for posting.

Superb catch, Paul. You need good eyes and right timing to get this so well. The Robber fly looks really scary. It illustrates how a famous predator can become a victim. You did a fantastic job in getting all this together with such an evidence and a technical quality. Bravo!

Outstanding macro, Paul!
Details, sharpness, composition and POV are perfect!

Bravo!

Wow, just wow! This is really the way I like to see macros. Action, well composed, great colors, superb BG, razorsharp details and very good lightening. You know how I am struggling with macroshots and when I decide to quit a macroshot like this one encourages me to go on. This is so great! Really, breathtakingly beautiful. Well done & TFS!

Regards,
Pieter

Hey, They say that imitation is the most sincere form of flattery!! ;-)) Great title by the way.. Excellent work Paul and a great moment captured. I hope to get lucky one day and get a dragon with damselfy myself. I've watched them go after em' but that's it. Very nice, Very well done!

Paul, I've always wished to get a similar shot, but, so far, I wasn't successful.

This pic is amazing; a great moment to show how life goes one. Excellent details, composition and sharpness.

Congratulations.

hello:)
Beautiful and interesting composition! Good POV, colors, DOF and details ! Thanks for sharing. Fiesta is over:)

Is little damsel putting one "hand" to the mouth pondering what hit him, or was he cut short trying to fold his little paws and pray for mercy?? Can't really make up my mind ;-)
The blue of the damsel stands out nicely, and the details on the front end of the robber are spot on. However, DOF is on the shallow side for a target as big as this, but if the light is not sufficient, there's nothing much to do about that ;-)

Such a great Nature's scene!
Well done!
Perfect details!
5*!

What a momant Paul! GREAT! Superb picture!

Excellent capture, the predator, predated.
What a beautiful scenary you had for this oportunity and you got advantage of it very nicely.
I am going for a DSLR and have a doubth between the new DG version of your 50mm 2.8 EX which has F45, of go for the 105mm. EX DG.
I have seen that with your sigma macro your min lenth to subject is 19 Cm. and with the 105mm 32 Cm.
Although the quality is much better, do you miss the capability of getting nearer you had with your Olympus? Thanks in advance, Felipe.

Not a great moment for the damsel, however, your timing is perfect for this capture, Paul!
Digital photography has certainly opened our eyes to more of the happenings around us, and especially to the macro world of such events as this well detailed composition.
Great job, thank you for sharing it with us.

Hello Paul!
Personal assessment of the photo: excellent.
Very strong visual impact.
Aptness of the photo for the site: excellent.
Personal assessment of the note: complete.
Thank you very much for sharing.

What a savage little beastie this is....expertly captured may I say!.....Ade

My husband is always telling me not to tamper with nature, sometimes I listen, sometimes I don't so I understand you wanting to help the Damsel. It is a good shot Paul, but as Mike has said, 'that's the circle of life' as much as sometimes it can be distressing to watch the events that take place. Awesome mcaro. Tack sharp. Nice work. Thanks.

Oh poor... Nature is cruel, but this is so.
The image is once again excellent, so sharp and detailed, and the direction of light is perfect, as if there were a spot to light up the scenery.
Congratulations for the shot, and also for your incredible sense of observation, Paul !

BRILLIANT! Not only in the action you captured Paul but the tecnical qualities as well. Work of art, frame this and hang it on the wall. :) MASTERPIECE!

Brilliant picture Paul, you are a mine of information regarding insects.
The passion shines through with your words.
Once again, great shot, it has it all.

Excellent! This again is one of those captures that isn't just another photo. To capture a moment like this is like once in a lifetime. The focus is a bit fuzzy but it actually helps focus on the centre where the action is happening. The subjects could have been a little more to the left, but still a very good photo overall.Keep shootin!!

How did I not see this before??
CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Magical shot! Really looks like some fairytale... with the bright blue eyes of the damsel, the large compund eyes of the Robber fly, and the depth of field also makes the background extremely suited for the scene. Great work! Thanks for sharing :)
