[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is great one for me, it's the first Ruddy Darter (Sympetrum sanguineum) that I have seen this year. This one is a male and it's colouration is that of an immature. They begin yellow and on increasing exposure to sunlight the characteristic red colouration spreads from the tip of the abdomen extending upwards. During it's immature period that can last up to 10 days, depending on temperature, this darter will spend it's time feeding over bushes, long grass, marshy areas and luckily for me cross-leaved heath.

The abdomen is normally held horizontally, regardless of the angle of the perch. The next shot I got of this the Dragon duly complied and held it's abdomen as described.

I hope you like it.

For those who don't like reflections I've made a workshop to show the reflections cloned out on the eye. In another workshop I have flipped and shown a close up of the cloning, I used the cells in the eyes as a guide.

Outstanding macro Paul!!!!
Excellent composition and DOF, superb sharpness!! Fantastic colors.

I like it very much, thank you for sharing.
well done!

What to say Paul, no words... beautiful shot!
By the way, I have just noticed Pieter has bought the 105 mm EX DG, so I will have a good reference to see how it goes.

Thanks very much for posting this one!

Great shot Paul, see your back on the dragonflies! Well This is really a very good close up, with the dragon fully focused, love the background colour to the dragonfly. Well done, I am sure well see more of these from you.

Excellent capture Paul,
I think the reflection's great. This is so sharp and well detailed, really fantastic. Well composed, good DOF and brilliant WS posts.
Thanks for posting, have a good week Paul.

Great macro, Paul.
The colours are great, well composed and very good details.
Excellent work.
The WS are also very good.

This is very special, Paul, due to the flamboyant BG taking this once over the subject, at least at first view. Then, the eye comes on the subject and discovers a beautifully sharp darter in the foreground. You play very well here with colors and DOF.
Very original presentation. A different concept. Great one!

Stunning !
Not only the dragonfly is perfect, but you captured a wonderful background which enhances it.
Great !!

A very nice capture Paul,
Excellent composition and sharp detail.
Beautiful BG.
Not seen one yet,but I'm sure they'll be about soon.
Tomorrow is my day off,so heres hoping!
Great work,very well done.

Very nice clear capture , even the bells of the heather flowers are perfect. Intresting POV allowing the wings not to intrude in the shot.
I went looking to day for darter but saw non, saw some fourspots but no good shots.

Magnificent macro capture Paul, light, colours and details are perfect. I think this is one of those shots that pushes the quality beyond the digicam and into the DSLR league. I would say this would be unbelievable at full resolution. Very fine work.

A beautiful capture Paul!
Excellent details, wonderful colors, and interesting POV. Congratulations on an amazing shot. Thank you.

What a superb capture!.....I see they are just starting to come out in my area and if I manage a shot as good as this I'll be more than happy....top notch work!

Hi Paul!
Wonderful purple photo! This composition looks amazing and unusual!

This is so amazing Paul, One of the greatest.
Wonderful POV, compo and focus.
Great use of light.
I wonder how would it be, if you could find a different BG highlighting the colour of flowers. Just an idea, since too much pink in the BG.
Great you shared this with us.
Thanks.

Last times we've got many pictures of Dragon and Damselflies on TN but your, Paul, is one of the best! Lovely BG made by flowers, excellent quality and details on insect. POV is also superb with almost invisible wings.

This is utterly amazing Paul! The day before yesterday I would have liked this picture a lot, but now I know (after 2 days of shooting 100s of blurred macros myself) how difficult this is, I really take my head off for you and take a deep bow. This is great sir! And you did this without a tripod? f14 and still 1/200 of second? It must have been very sunny. Anyway, best of the best! Well done & TFS!

Regards,
Pieter

Hi again Paul, I loved this shot. Not only because of a great specimen you shot but also I love the plant in the BG. I think it's a kind of Erica species.
Very well done.
