[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
White-Letter Hairstreak, Strymonidia w-album

Like most Hairstreaks, this butterfly is fast and elusive. It makes photography a matter of timing and patience. They are more likely to be at rest during the cooler hours of the morning, before the air temperature rises, and at this time they come down from the treetops to visit flowers, especially brambles. The individual shown here was feeding actually on the ground among some small wild flowers.

The adults of the White-Letter Hairstreak fly in July and August in England and the egg overwinters. The larvae feed on Elm, Wych Elm or Lime trees from March to late May or June, when pupation occurs. In France this species is known as Le W-Blanc, and in Germany as Ulmenzipfelfalter.

This picture has been cropped and resized for TN, with some selective sharpening.

Hi Alan. You seem to find so many different butterflies for us to see, This one is not to often seen as you say all ways on the move. So you have taken a fine close up of the White-Letter Hairstreak, I like the side view which you have taken with fine detail and natural colours. well done TFS.
Nick..

Have a nice weekend.

Hello Alan,
An excellent capture of this fine White-letter Hairstreak. I like the POV, the sharp focus and the natural colours. Nicely framed too with a smooth pastsel background.
TFS and regards, Ulla

Hi Alan
Well done on getting a shot of such an elusive butterfly. I managed to get some of White Admiral last week which can have a similar habit of staying in the tree tops. Your patience definitely payed off!
Kind Regards
Vinny
