I'm very glad to capture an Emperor Dragonfly (Anax imperator) in-flight, although it's still not as good as I'd like. Hopefully I will be able to improve as the flight season for this Dragonfly normally extends into August and sometimes September.

This is a male, and I shot him patrolling his patch. He has picked up some cargo on his leg but he managed to get rid of it a little later. Males are at their peak activity around noon but they are also known to show crepuscular phases of activity at dawn and twilight. Males will perch during the hottest part of the day, although it's better described as hanging than perching. This male will patrol and defend his territory, he is able to see off most species with the exception of the Southern Hawker (Aeshna cyanea).

The average liftime of a male is around 4 weeks and a maximum lifetime is proibably around 8 weeks.

I hope you like him.

Paul

Amazing capture of this Dragon Fly in flight, how in the world did you manage to do it!
Great composition, color contrast and POV
Good job!
Thanks for sharing
S

You need to stop this guy and give him a fine for littering, he's dropping his "food paper" ;-))
Looks eminently sharp and clean to me, only wish would be for a bit more light on his near side, but that's hard with the light angle you had.

This is picture which I won't take with my cam for sure ;-) Almost perfect capture Paul. Quality is superb. This little something attached to Dragon's leg looks for first sight as sea-horse ;-) I hope this isn't last photo of this kind!

to me this is a near impossible shot! now how did you capture this using that big 50-500! excellent work. TFS!

Superbe photo, j'aime beaucoup.
Bravo, pas évident à prendre en photo.
Nico.

Fantastic action capture Paul. Excellent sharpness and so amny details. Perfect colours and very good composition. You did a real good job on this one.

This has got to be the clearest inflight shoot I have seen outside those high speed studio films the americans used to do for National Geographic. the head is very clear, very difficult as the Emperors never seem to stop when patroling their patch even to hover Unlike the Migrant hawkers that have a momentry hover at the end of each patrol run.
I wonder if he's been raiding a spiders web, I have seen others do it?
TFS worth far more than 2 points

For me, this is a very good capture. I know folk like all crisp, tack sharp full monties.
However, it's not always the thing to do.
This pic depics it, the center of attention has been captured. So, in my opinion, nothing wrong with this Paul.
Cool capture, well done on all aspects.
I like the trophy he's holding on to, like the osprey. LOL

Hi Paul,
That is a great capture. I just went to our nature center tonight with my new lens. I tried to shoot a few dragons, but when I see yours, I just deleted mine. I willl need alot more practice. Great work!

Hello Paul,

This is fantastic. I really like this incoming Emperor. Details are sharp as a knife and I love the colors. The cargo is a great bonus. Just maybe the subject is a little bit too centered, although it doesn't bother me. Well done & TFS!

Regards,
Pieter

Nice work Paul, This is an exceptional in-flight when you consider just how difficult these are to get right. Very well done!

Not only this is an Emperor, but you succeeded in capturing it in-flight... Well, that's not fair, Paul, I feel down, I'm gonna quit ;-)
Amazing. I'm curious to see what might look like a pic you'd be entirely proud of, if this one "is not as good as you'd like".
Congratulations !

Brilliant shot Paul,
You must have a very steady hand, and a lot of patience.
Well composed, good detail, colours and sharpness.
Nicely captured, well timed shot.
Thanks for posting, have a good week.

This has been attempted by many... (myself with a blue emperor included) I can honestly say if not the best, one of the best, Paul. This takes patience and dedication, and SKILL!

Paul, what a pity he'll die so soon. Anyway, now, he's here for good.

It's an excellent shot.

Great details despite the action/flight.

Congratulations.

I added your picture to a theme of mine.

Fantastic shot Paul. Great detail on the head and body, the blurred wings are just what is required for this type of shot.
I don't know how you guys can produce these kinds of shots and still not be happy.
