[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
A newly emerged Six-spot Burnet (Zygaena filipendulae). These gaudy day flying moths look like a sluggish bee when in flight. Their beautiful colours are a warning to predators that they are full of foul tasting poisons. They can be found in areas of grassland across most of the UK. The caterpillars feed on Bird's-foot Trefoil (Lotus corniculatus). It is only when the moth has hatched that you can see the vivid hindwing. Once the wings are fully dried, the moth will fold them downwards.

This shot was not as easy as it looks - the moth was on a long grass stalk and although the breeze was light it was making it sway. I find the best thing to do in this situation is to set up the shot as best as you can, wait for the wind to lull - then hold the button down and hope one comes out sharp! The resulting shot has been cropped and sharpened.

Kind Regards

Vinny www.vincentblood.com

Hello Vinny,
A very fine and unusual macro of Six-spot Burnet 'drying out' after emergence from the pupa. You made good use of the lighting to achieve fine sharpness and just the right DOF, despite the gusts of wind, a common bother when photographing insects in the wild.
Thanks and kind regards,
Ivan

Hi,
Wonderful and your best image, also very good natural history on record, beautiful that too. I know about wind and how difficult to get sharp images, its sometimes testing your patience. you did very well. tfs.

Hello Vinny,
Very interesting moment, with this new adult, with perfect sharpness and nice red tones of the wings. I can imagine it was not easy to do with the wind, the short distance and the difficult position for you to make the focus. Congratulations,
Catherine

Vinny:
This is close to perfect. A lovely smooth background that makes the main subject stand out, and all the important details within the DOF. You have caught this moth in the brief phase of "wing drying," showing it in a rarely seen profile. It is always windy in macro land ;)
Regards, Nigel.
