The predator here is Tibellus oblongus the prey is another spider probably of the family Araneidae. I've never seen this species with another spider before. However, I have not seen too many T. oblongus in my time chiefly because they are incredibly difficult to spot. Their colouration, as you can see, is a very good match for dried grasses on which they normally hunt for small insects. To further add to the camouflage they will typically adopt a position on grass stems with legs I, II fully extended forward and both legs IV and one leg III extended rearward, the remaining leg III is used to grasp the grass stem. It's a very similar posture to spiders of the Tetragnatha genus.

This specimen is a female. The males are similar in colour, alhtough normally darker, and have a slimmer abdomen.

There are only 2 species of this genus in N. Europe and Britain, the other being T. maritimus. The two species are very similar in colouration and size although T. maritimus prefers grassy coastal dunes (but can be found inland) and it typically has more spots along the abdomen and carapace.

Depending on what book you read Tibellus is either placed in a subfamily Philodrominae within Thomisidae or in a separate family - Philodromidae.

I hope you like it.

Hi Paul!
Because of you I'm falling in love with spiders :-)
Your is so cute!!!

Nice and sharp capture with good details and light. Nicely oof bg. Interesting subject, I don't think I've seen one of these, either.

Very good note for a very interesting subject. I know these for having seen them furtively. I suppose that this one was quieter, due to the feast going on. Anyway, the shot is very good as usual, specially well exposed with the tangent light. Very attractive nature environment with this grass stem.

Excellent capture Paul, good light sharp details. I love the look of this spider with its markings. Interesting to see it hunt down another spider. Very good work.

Great shot Paul

Very good macro, Paul.
I like the brown tone.
Well composed, good POV and details.
And as usual, a good and informative note.
Well done, my friend.

An excellent harmonicscene between all elements you found and captured in a great way,Paul!
Very well worked with great DOF indeed, fantastic details and what a nice light here!
nicely composed and I like the time you worked when insect was diagonaly in the composition, great one!
Best Regards
M

Hi Paul,
Beautiful work: the details of this spider devouring another are excellent. The comment is very interesting.
TFS, cordially,
Jean-Patrick

Hi Paul, this is great. I have (had ... she may have gone) one of these in the lavender in the front garden. To be honest I just assumed she was a Nursery but with different markings :-o - I digress. A crisp clear shot, excellent detail - I really like the composition, but, (IMHO) I would have preferred to see the tip of the grass as it looks as though they are very close to it.
Thank you for posting.

Hi Paul,

Good details on this one (I especially like the little prey) and well composed. This photo has a crisp and clear look. Your notes are always perfect and this forms no exception. How can you know so much about insects and especially spiders? Well done & TFS!

Regards,
Pieter

Wow Paul, I dont know how you sniff all these out, but they are probably giants compared to what you work with at the office. The sharpness and detail is excellent - as ussual.

Thanks for posting - Are we still seeing the end of this year?
