...Go! He looks to me like a runner on the starting blocks or a loaded spring!

This is a male Keeled Skimmer Orthetrum coerulescens. It's a small Darter-like dragonfly with a preference for acid peat regions. This species will breed in small rivers and streams, ditches and swampy pools, typically where there is Sphagnum moss.

They have a flight season that lasts from June to August although I have seen them quite deep into September.

Whilst feeding, they will perch on the ground or at higher temperatures on low vegetation such as heather. They will often perch with the fore-legs raised in flight position (this specimen has one foreleg on teh perch and the far foreleg is tucked up in the flight position). After perching the wings are gradually depressed and twisted until they lie in a plane alomst 90 deg to the axis of the body.

I hope you like him.

Paul

Hi Paul,
A fine specimen indeed, I wonder if it's close to the unnamed one I have, sure look similar.
Anyway, this is a very good close up of the Skimmer. I like the DOF setting approach you took, I would have gone more but that's a preference, the colors are great and the details are well seen. Your lighting just squeeked in, well done. The composition is just abit tight but well done.
Excellent work.
With the 50mm and 2x, you must of have been centimeters from it, cool.

Mike

Excellent shot, Paul. I like how you have framed it with the wing stretching from corner to corner. Incredible detail - with even the hairs on his back so clear. Perfect DOF - making a beautiful, blurry background. Well captured.

Paul, excellent composition with excellent sharpness.

Great pov and colors; I like bg too.

Excellent job.

Hi Paul

Here we have another excellent capture with the focus on the details in the body/head. The details are very clear down to the tiniest hair. The colours are very natural and I love these blurred backgrounds setting off the main subject so nice. Looking at the sunburned twig with all that light I am very surprised that you managed not to burn anything in the light blue body but of course you are a skilled photographer so why wonder;-). The composition is perfect with the wings stretched forward against the other side of the frame really add something alive to the picture. - All over a very interesting and pleasant picture to look at.

Hi Paul,
It's a very amazing and amusing shot! This dragonfly makes me think of that, out of breath, of the cartoon of Walt Disney, "Bernard and Bianca" ;-)
Composition, DOF, contrast and colours are perfect. Very well done!
TFS, cordially,
Jean-Patrick

Brilliant capture Paul,

Yes Paul, very good title. It looks very dynamic and ready to fast start. It remainds me also modern air fighters or maybe light spaceships from Star Wars ;-) Composition is good, same as DOF and sharpness. Eyes and body are in focus so this is ok.

Paul,
your macro-shots are better and better day by day!
I'm jealous and I'm happy :-) I would like to photos as good as yours but I can't. So I'm very happy to look at yours!

Hello Paul!

Hi Paul,

The pose of this Skimmer is indeed fascinating and it does look like a runner, preparing to set an Olympic record. The blurred BG is great and because it's peaceful for the eyes it suits the subject well and makes it stand out. Maybe it's just me but I would have liked to see the wings fully in focus aswell. But I guess it was impossible to create a wider DOF, shooting handheld, right? Perhaps it was even your intention to het the wings slightly oof to draw more attention to the body and head. Did you really shoot handheld at 1/80? You must have a steady hand then! Well done & TFS!

Regards,
Pieter
