Swallow

This is one of our more well-known summer visitors, the Swallow. I met this one at Minsmere RSPB reserve in Suffolk (Norfolk and Suffolk seem to have more than their fair share of RSPB reserves!).

Swallows build nests on buildings like House Martins do but they prefer a more rural setting and their colouring is quite different. House Martins are brown and blue/black above and white underneath and on their rump. Swallows have a white tummy, red throat/forehead area and are blue/black above. Their long tails are very distinctive. After wintering in Africa, Britain's swallows arrive around March to May to start breeding. They disappear again around September. The sight of a group of swallows perched on a wire is a classic sign of late summer. In fact I got images of swallows doing just that, but after looking at the images of Swallows already on TN I turned craven and decided not to post them ;).

This one was perched inside a deep edifice that looked something like a cross between a well and a chimney. It is not often I get to be topside of a swallow at rest. Of course, it was topside of an awful lot of space itself inside this 'chimney'.

Minsmere is a beautiful reserve btw. We saw Sand Martins there as well as Avocets, geese, Shoveller ducks and lots more. It is well worth a visit.

PP included crop, levels, contrast and sharpening for web. I have been following Adrian's tips on sharpening and did two edits with two different takes on the sharpening process. I'd be grateful if you could give me your input on this one. Thanks for looking :)

La lumière est vraiment sympa! Très bonne netteté : merci et bravo.

Hello Hollie,
A proverb says "one swallow doesn't make a summer", but this one made your happiness ;-)
Very beautiful composition, the details are very fine and the colors sharp. Nice work and note.

Hi Hollie, nice shot. The focus is good as are the details. I like the 'urban' backdrop, different. I think the composition could be improved by cropping off about 1.5 inches from the bottom - hold a book or piece of paper over the bottom and see what you think.

Very well done, good note too.

Nice capture Hollie,
Good clear detail and colours. I agree with Paul about further cropping, also adding a black frame would improve the post IMO.
Still a great capture, Thanks for posting

Hollie, maybe I'd try to blur the bricks a little more, but that's just an opinion.

I like the top pov and composition. Sharpness, to me, is okay. And since you asked for a feedback about it, I use Intellisharpen II (www.fredmiranda.com). It's a Photoshop plug-in I really enjoy.

René Lortie (www.treknature.com/members/rlortie/) has already used Intellisharpen in many of his photos. Through his notes, I came to know the plug-in.

That's it.

Best regards.

Lívio

Hi Hollie,

Very nice capture of this little beauty. Great sharpness and lots of details in the plumage. The colours are very good and the metalic look in the back looks great. Very clever handling of the light with the dark areas. The diagonal made by the ironbar works great - not only as a resting place for the swallow but also in some way by dividing the picture in two different looks and textures - the bricks in the bottom and the rusty iron in top of the picture which makes the composition more interesting.

Hi Hollie!
Personal assessment of the photo: great.
Strong visual impact.
Aptness of the photo for the site: excellent.
Personal assessment of the note: complete.
TFS.

Hello Hollie, Great capture of this handsome bird. Had these passing through here a month or two ago but never came away with a decent capture..I think you've done an excellent job of sharpening. I use Intellisharpen II as well. But after P.P. and resizing for TN, if it still needs a little zing for viewing, I use a very small amount of USM..Paul Prince did a sharpening on a recent post of mine at the 200 KB size. He used an amount of 75% with a radius of .3 and a threshold of 0. I find it's a good starting place at that size. See the difference it made on "The Widows Wings", a post from a few days ago..Oh yeah, Well done!!

These swallows are among my favorite birds. They play a lot and are fun to watch! The colors here are so lovely, Hollie. Your point of view from above captures the bird's sleek outline.

Not often se see shots of a resting Swallow! So, unusual POV, then! Super sharp and well saturated colours as well.
Well done.
