Tribe Volucellini

Large & thickly bulit hoverflies which mimic bumblebees or have the warning colours (yellow, orange or white) used by hornets and wasps. The tribe is represented by a single genus which contain five species.

Genus Volucella

Adults occur in midsummer and are most easliy found at flowers, especially umbellifers and brambles along woodland margins and in urban wasteland. They will even turn up in gardens and a are fond of buddleia flowers. All but one species of British Volucella are assciociated with bee and wasps nests either as scavengers in the bottom of the nest or as in the case of V. inanis, ectoparasites of wasp larve.

Volucella inanis

This species is very similar to V. zonaria there are a few differences in the abdominal markings and V. inanis is smaller in size.

The outer suberbs of London and the adjacent countryside have been the main focus for the distribution, being a relatively frequent species in some years, even in gardens, though it remains distinctly local (Never found in Royston Vasey).

The larve as mentioned are parasites of wasp larvae and V. inanis is associated with the nests of the German wasp Vespula germanica, and the hornet, Vespa crabro.

I hope you like it.

Great frame with great details and very good colours, very good quality!
You forgot to clean dust spots out of the frame and one of them is in very strategic place... :)

Hi Paul,
An excellent shot. The colors and detail are superb. The DOF is perfect on this one. The OOF backround really makes him standout. Great Job!

Hi Paul,
Excellent shot and well done on the composition and details.
What a beauty, Paul.
You know, I didn't notice what Elroyie said, that's how bad this monitor is.
I need a new one, along with a lap top, lenses. Crap sakes, the list is too long. LOL

Bardzo dobre makro, ¶wietne mocne kolory i dobra ostro¶æ.
Robert.

Hi Paul, lovely shot. I find the light in the eye a bit sharp but I know myself how hard that is to deal with, flash is by nature harsh and I think we need to look into professional diffusers/softboxes. It is a minor nit in any case. This image has fantastic detail and sharpness. It is very well exposed and has a great DOF/BG. You know how to set your subjects well, I like your POV very much. Very nicely done :)

Very good macro, Paul.
Good POV, the angle are very good. Well composed and good details. On my monitor the fly seems a little dark.
Very well done.

Hi Paul, dear co-worker ! I do not have the time to write a decent comment. I give to you the well deserved smiley.

The paths are not to be found, but made.
And the activity of making them, changes both the maker and their destination. "

Thank you for sharing pictures and notes and for the enjoyment which they give to me.

Πολύ καλη μακροφωτογραφία Paul με πολύ καλή λεπτομέρεια. Ίσως θα έπρεπε να δοκίμαζες μια διαφορετική γωνία λήψης πιο ψηλά.(gr)

Hi Paul,
excellent detail, good composition, and wonderful colour contrast with the dark yellow infront of the nicely blurred lush green. Only slight nit is the bit of gradation of the dark brownish green at top right corner. As is, it's very well done!
Gabi
P.S. Did not notice the dust-spots before they were mentioned, and I can't even blame my monitor... ;-)
