| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Taken about 2 weeks ago, this is a Pale Tussock Moth Caterpillar (or Calliteara pudibunda).
It was found on a very dull day, crossing a footpath. Its colours are such that I saw it a good 10m away.
It wasn't making much progress, so I carefully had it crawl onto a stick, and moved it to the otherside of the footpath.
Whilst doing so, I took a couple of photo's of it and this was the best. The camera had problems focusing on the catterpillar, seeimg to prefer its hairs... For more info, see
Moths and Butterflies of Europe and North Africa. Select Calliteara pudibunda from the list on the left handside (4th one down).
The photo has been croppped, resized, USM'ed and framed. It was taken on the point and shoot, so focusing and resolution is limited, but it was the caterpillar I was interested in and thought I would share. |

Amazing caterpillar, Emma. It looks like a bottle brush. The colors are very unusual for a caterpillar, and I like the reddish shaft sticking up in front. Very interesting. Well done and TFS. : )

One of the wierdest caterpillars you are ever likely to meet in the UK! Oh, and Manyee - that tuft of red hairs "sticking up at the front" is actually it's rear end! :)
Well spotted, Emma.
It sure looks like a nice cat. I have seen it before here on TN, think Robert posted one. Well done.
