I really like weevils – they remind me of Gonzo from the Muppet Show!
This is one of more than 50,000 species of weevil (Curculionoidea) in comparison to only 4,500 species of mammals. Weevils are just one type of beetle of which there are well over 300,000 species and beetles are just one type of invertebrate of which there are well over 1,000,000 species. Invertebrates are thought to contribute nearly three-quarters of all life on Earth (excluding bacteria).
I’m not even going to attempt to try and identify this little guy… the difference between many species can be as subtle as an extra segment in the antennae or the length of his hair!
Anyway, this weevil was around 4-5mm in size and there were quite a few in the garden throughout the summer… if anyone does have any ideas to the species I would be really grateful! |
