Snowy Owl - (Nyctea scandiaca)

The snowy owl has mostly white plumage with darker bars and speckles (more pronounced in the female). Its long, dense feathers cover even the toes and most of the bill, giving it excellent insulation against the cold, even when the temperature falls below -40°. It lives primarily in the Arctic polar region, but can be seen as a migratory visitor to northern Britain. It is more likely to be seen in Britain during a very cold spell.
The Snowy Owl hunts by quartering over open land, searching for small mammals, insects and birds. It will sometimes take birds in the air, but the bulk of its prey is caught on the ground. All is swallowed whole and any indigestible parts such as fur, feathers or bones are later regurgitated as pellets. Its primary food source in Scandinavia and the Arctic is the lemming.
It is generally only active around dawn or dusk or during the long twilight periods in polar winters and summers.

Origin:
Winter visitor, has occasionally bred in Shetlands.

Size: 55 - 70 cm.
The female is slightly larger than the male.
Description: Mostly all-white with some darker bars and speckles (female more speckled than the male). Bright yellow eyes.

Habitat:
Open country, moorland or rough fields.
Young: Breeds May in Arctic region, laying 4 - 10 eggs, each egg at two day interval. Incubation 32 - 34 days. Chicks leave nest at 3 - 4 weeks old, before they are able to fly and are still fed by parents. Fledging 7 - 8 weeks.
Nest A shallow depression scraped in the ground on a ridge or other prominent and snow-free location. Lined with just a few feathers and a little grass or moss

Diet:
Rabbits, rats, mice, voles, birds up to partridge size, insects and spiders.

Taken at Eagle Heights in Kent.
Jesses cloned out in PS.

Wow, what an in-flight, and what a bird! I'm impressed, very much impact. A few spots in the feathers are OE, but who cares. Wonderful pose you captured, well composed !
You shot this at 200 mm? That must have been really close!

Gabi

Excellent shot Terry! Superb catch! Wonderful action, great pose and perfect exposure. Well composed, good DOF & POV. Sharp details. Well done & TFS!

Regards,

Excellent capture Terry. Perfect dof and sharpness showing the details in the plpumage and a slight blur on the wings and legs to give the sence of movement. The colours on the bird look fantastic and you did a great job on the light not to burn the white feathers. Composition is very good. All over a very pleasant and interesting picture to look at. Well done.
