The Six-spot Burnet, Zygaena filipendulae, is a day flying moth. The forewings are a glossy blue/black colour with six bright red spots (the sixth spot is hidden in a crease of the forewings from this angle), the hind wings crimson with a blue/black border. Wingspan 30-40 millimetres. Their antennae, which they use for touch and smell, are club shaped which is unusual for a moth, but taper gradually to a point unlike the butterflies.

The caterpillar is short and fat, about 22 millimetres long, and is a green/yellow colour with 2 rows of black spots along its back. Their main foodplant is Bird's Foot Trefoil Lotus corniculatus.

The bright colours are for warning predators not to eat them as they contain cyanide! This means that they can fly (and they fly pretty slowly) in broad daylight completely unmolested by birds - but spiders are less fussy!

There were lots in this flowery meadow, and I took several shots, but I liked this angle as it gave intense colour and kept the antennae in focus.

Sharp picture well exposed. The shallow DOF give the impression that the bug have been paste on top of a flower picture, but I know it's not. Excellent details, POV is unusual but I like it. TFS

Hi Nigel, I was introduced to these moths on TN this year, and I think they're great. Such stunning colours and patterns. Good composition, perfect colours and details. Well done, thank you.

Hi Niel,
Some eye popping colors in this one. Great detail and perfect DOF in this shot. Great notes as always. Thanks for the education.

Hi Nigel!
Sorry, no time for decent critique, but enough to give you well deserved smiley :)

//Superb shot of one of my favourite creatures. Lovely colours//

Hi Nigel,
a beautiful shot, this butterfly is so pretty, also the pink flower. Excellent sharpness and colours, very good job, thanks

Hi Nigel, Good colour and detail, the shot lacks impact though due to your choice of perspective, taking the shot from the side at an angle would have added more impact than looking straight down on it.

Regards
Terry.

Nice one Nigel,
I like the different match of colors and the original POV.
That bug just perfectly wear its name !!!!

Hi Nigel, very nice shot. I agree with Terry to some extent although I quite like this viewpoint. The colours and details are very good. I do wonder about hte ID though. I can only count 5 spots on each wing, do you think it's one of the two 5-spot Burnets?

Nice shot.

Hi Nigel,

Excellent shot and well done on the details and composition.

Mike

Excellent capture with great details, colour and an even greater information...(thanks)
Cecilia

Hi nigel!
It's my favourite moth!
Your photo shows it perfectly and very interesting! Thank you for that.

Hello Nigel,
nice to see a member of one of my favourite lepidoptera families in your files! Beautiful clear colours, excellent details and a composition that makes use of the full width in a clever and attractive way. Picturing that long bodied burnet in a conventional way on high format would look less interesting and would also deliver a smaller image when looking at the JPG in slide show mode e.g. from a video beamer. Very well done. Thank you for the perfect notes, too. Regards,
Peter

P.S. Just noticed Paul's comment. I didn't count the number of spots, either. So the ID might rather be Zygaena trifolii.

Hello Nigel,
Excellent shot, has good colours, details, and correct light. Beautiful insect.
Regards
Hernán

Hi Merlin
As I say to another critique to Peter stoeck I love Zygaena filipendulae.
Every summer in my village love to passing some hours with insects like this. They are good company...
Great shot beautiful and clear colours.
Thank you for this little walk to my village
See you

Hi Nigel, you are specialist for butterflies (you help to Haintz), and this moth is fantastic. So strong coloures and wondeful contrast on this flower. TFS
