Silver-ground Carpet Xanthorhoe montanata

Wingspan 24-28 mm.

Continuing the unofficial theme of more obscure moths?

A common species throughout Britain, displaying a wide range of differing depths of colour, although all forms have the distinctive whitish ground colour.

The adults fly from May into July, and it can often be disturbed during the day from low vegetation in woodlands, clearings and similar habitats. However its main flight time is at night when it is a regular visitor to the light trap.

Low plants, such as bedstraw (Galium) are the foodplants in the larval stage.

I think moths are very underestimated creatures. They're common and most people don't like them. But after closer look they reveal theirs beauty. This one looks great - delicate and nice patterns on wings, subtle colours. Good idea to present us this little gem Nigel.

Hi Nigel,
An excellent shot on this moth. Looks like your flash has given a beautiful exposure. The colors look great. Very sharp detail.

Hello Nigel,

It's a very interesting geometrid moth, one of the group of species imitating bird feaces.
Nice colours and contrast!
Best greetings,
Michal

Nigel, you do have some very good images of these insects. I don't like moths at all, goes way back to my younger days! But here is a very attractive one with outstanding clarity and details, and good lighting too. Well shown, thank you

Nigel, contrast is really great here.

Besides, great sharpness and details.

I like dof too, so that the whole insect is in focus.

Hello Nigel,
beautiful Geometrid, well presented with very clear details and well controlled naturalistic colours on a perfectly fitting well detailed background. I like the unique patterns of wings of that family of moths. Happy to have discovered this "carpet" in your archive. Hope you are well and that you will be able to have a look into TN every now and then.
With thanks, and best regards,
Peter
