Wood-lice (Oniscus muriarius)

I’ve been doing some gardening at home today and had to dig out an old tree stump.
The bark was peeling off so I pulled it back and lots of woodlice came running out.
I got my camera and took a few shots of the horrible things.The one that is diving for cover has some green patches on its back (algae?).

The adult wood louse is about 15mm in length, quite flat and slate grey in colour with a white fringe and seven pairs of legs. Wood lice are not insects but crustaceans and are members of the same family as Shrimp.They are infact quite edible and Wood-louse sauce is apparently an excellent sauce for fish…….I think I’ll give that a miss!!
Distribution...
Wood lice are usually found in damp areas and they are associated with dead and rotting vegetation and wood. They are often found beneath stones, flowerpots and other similar materials and nooks and crannies in the garden providing suitable cover.
There are about thirty-five species of wood lice and they are essentially garden creatures but will on occasions enter houses/buildings searching for protection from the onset of cold weather. These are usually the garden wood lice.
Once indoors they tend to group together mainly at the edges of carpets, floor coverings and under skirting boards. They can also be found in corners and dark places such as kitchen cupboards. If disturbed wood lice naturally curl up into a ball.
Life cycle...
The mature wood lice mate and the female produces up to one hundred and fifty eggs, which she contains inside her body in a brood pouch.
Once the eggs have hatched the young are released into the environment and are white in colour and around 2mm in length with six pairs of legs.
The wood louse takes up to a year to become full size and during this time they will grow an extra pair of legs.
Wood lice do not breed indoors, they usually only come inside to protect themselves from cold weather.

I reckon that these are the first woodlice on here. I also reckon that those pictured are two different species. I have also heard that these can be cooked and eaten and taste very much like shrimp. Great shot Andy.

Very nice detail and the prespective with the different plans is very good. The composition is perfect. Great one!

Andy, Interesting critters captured with great detail in this their natural habitat. Sounds like ya rocked their little world in a big way! I like the fine texture seen in the bark & your POV that includes the green BG for needed color. Super note & Well done!!

Excelente composicion con 2 ejemplares con buen POV y perfecto encuadre y DOF.
El colorido,textura y brillo de estos pequeños blindados es maravilloso.

The guys are posting all kinds of hand stands done by dragonflies, but you are the first to post one done by wood lice :)

Classical critique: nice composition, great POV and DOF and a very sharp one. Is it OK?

I count 6 different levels or plans in your picture including the BG and that provided a terrible DOF.

I am trying to repay some debts, but it is rather difficult to find some posting where there is not already ample critiques/credit given.
