Sanderling

Calidris alba

These guys are incredibly fast, they run almost as fast as they can fly and I feel very lucky to get this shot. They run around like madmen trying to find seal poo so they can eat the worms! The picture was taken early in the morning with a very low sun I particularly like the reflection, the movement in the legs and the foot prints behind.

The sanderling is a small, plump, energetic wading bird. It has a short straight black bill and medium length black legs. It is pale grey above and white underneath, and there is a black mark at its shoulder where the folded wing meets the body. It does not breed in the UK, but is a winter visitor and passage migrant in spring and autumn, journeying to and from their high Arctic breeding grounds.

Where does it live?
Breeding
High Arctic tundra near freshwater lakes.

Wintering
Usually coastal, on sandy shores and estuaries.

Passage
As wintering, but occasionally may turn up on the edges of large inland lakes and reservoirs.

Where to see it
Best looked for where there are long, sandy beaches, around most of the coast other than in the south-west and the rocky coasts of mainland Scotland.

What does it eat?
Small marine worms, crustaceans and molluscs

What does it sound like?
Its call, usually given in flight, is a liquid ‘twick, twick’.

When to see it
All year round.

Hello Paul,
It's a lovely picture, very clear. I like the look of the legs a lot. You can see that bird was in move and that makes the photo more interesting. Footprints are nice bonus too and the warm lighting on the bird is beautiful.
Is it full frame shot? I wish there were more space from below so the reflection wasn't cut.
Anyway, it's still a great shot and I like it.
VERY WELL DONE!

Paul,

Another fantastic picture. I love the light, and the reflection. No nits, actually.

Well done
Jan-Hendrik

Hi Paul,
OUTSTANDING! Nothing better than an early or late sun at the beach. The light here is very soft. Colors a subtle and very beautiful. Nice sharp detail. Great compo. with the reflection so well shown.

Hi, Paul.
Exceptionally beautiful light for bird shot. Very good action, pose also. All tecnical parameters are excellent. The only thing is as Monica already mentioned, some room is needed between shadow and frame.

Hi Paul,

Well done on the capture and composition
Would have been nice to have seen the full reflection and it is a wee bit soft.
The warm colors are great. Excellent work.

Mike

Fantastic shot ! I love the early morning light and the reflection. Nuance in BG colors is nice too, with no distracting items.
TFS !

This is a very nice picture Paul. The captured movement on the feet is excellent and the light is very warm. Details are sharp and POV is great. I really like the reflection and find it a shame that you just didn't capture all of it. Anyways; a photo to be proud of.

Regards,
Pieter

Paul,

A very clear photo of the subject. Even the reflection is clear showing how still the water around the bird was when taking the pic. I like the Composition for getting the reflection in and the POV making for a good, clear shot of the bird and environment.

TFS,
Sheriff

Very good light and very good capture of this bird, I think that you oversharpened this picture a little bit, maybe a little more room on the bottom would be better.

Great shot. Excellent detail and very well stopped. Colours look great and the background is so smooth.

Well done and TFS

Hi Paul,
this is a beautiful picture.
The body is very sharp and the legs is in motion blurr so he must be in a hurry.
Lovely light and colours, well composed and good POV.
Excellent work, my friend.

Hi Paul!

I know these birds from tv - they're really fast! Congratulations for this shot! I also like reflection, footprints and blurred legs. Warm light added good mood to your picture.

Hi Paul
What a great composition.
Love the color and the refection in the ground. Great POV
Thank You
Good note
JC

Good shot of this sanderling, we get them in Oz too, but ours come from Siberia 12,000 km away.
Great sharpness on the body and the blurred feet give the impression of rapid movement. I love watching them run along the tide line their legs move incredibly fast.
Nice composition too, reflection is a bonus.

It looks like it's tiptoeing (thru the tulips!) Paul. Wonderful capture, so clear to see. Its plumage has a lovely colour with the early morning light on it. I would have preferred to see all the reflection, but it's 100% better than my bird shots! Well shown, thank you
Janice

Beautiful shot of this beach dweller, everything is perfect Paul, I especially like the semi-skewed reflection. Well done. :)

Good sense of movement, and a real sense of life in this with the bird running across the wet sand. As has been said, shame the reflection isn't quite all there, but a good capture none the less.

Great timing, sharpness, details and exposure make this a stunning image. I like the things you like about it...the footsteps especially. Gorgeous pose from the bird and POV from you. The BG is beautiful too. Great picture, especially as it is such a fast moving bird. Very well done :)

Lighting is perfect, warm and well saturated, Excellent POV

Beautifully dynamic capture with the motion blurr in the legs, and great sharpness otherwise. I chased them also and it is awfully difficult (I did not manage to catch it on the go ... had to wait for a siesta and the start off afterwards). Gorgeous light and wonderful mirror reflection. This shot has an awful lot going for it. HIGH IMPACT (and yes it's cute too)!
Gabi

Good use of the 500 end of the Sigma it is a cracking capture so sharp yet full of movement, the evening light looks superb, if one was to pick a nit it would be to have a fraction more space below the reflection, which I suppose could be cloned in at a pinch . TFS yours Robert

brilliant! beautiful beautiful light and tak sharp! nice action, reflection. TFS!

Bonjour Paul
Un superbe oiseau, les couleurs et détails sont excellents et le BG est lumineux et contrastant.Joli cet effet de miroir.

Félicitations et au revoir....JP

Merci
