On a recent trip to Northumberland we stopped off at the Lake District on the way home. We didn't have long to take pictures, we arrived just a few minutes before the sun disappeared. I was frantically looking for a good composition whilst the golden sun was illuminating the mountains and this is the best I could do.

The Lake District National Park is the largest English National Park, covering fells, dales, lakes, villages, towns, beaches and tidepools.
The Lake District National Park has many special qualities unique to the area. There are over fourteen lakes and tarns although officially Bassenthwaite Lake is the only titled ‘lake’ - the rest are ‘meres’ or ‘waters’.

The rocks forming the Lake District provide a dramatic record of nearly 500 million years. Colliding continents, deep oceans, tropical seas, and kilometre-thick ice sheets helped shape the landscape we see today.

There have been people in the Lake District since the end of the last ice age. There are traces of prehistoric and medieval field systems, archaeological monuments such as stone circles, Roman roads and forts and the remains of the mining, gunpowder and wood-processing industries.

The red squirrel is still found here, and there are woodlands rich in Atlantic mosses, ferns and lichen. Lakes, tarns and rivers are nationally important for their range of habitats and species such as vendace, charr, crayfish and schelly. On the fells ravens and birds of prey are a relatively common sight

Hi Paul,
What an amazing photo. I like the wide angle potrait shot. The slow exposure is spot on, not too long and not too short. The sharpness is excellent and I realy like the warm sunlight on the mountains. Great color and POV.
Thanks,
Niek

Hi Paul,
Great shot with lovely exposure! The composition is superb. Good colours and fabulous scenery. I especially like the scattered rocks and the good depth of field. The pretty sky and lovely hills also add a lot to the shot. Well captured and framed!
Claudia

Hi Paul,
Excellent depth, wonderful effect and light. I'm learning from you..again ;-)
Very well done!
P.S. What was your exposure bias, with the 3 second exposure and these lighting conditions?

What an image! Love the rock in the fg, with the pebbles (small rocks?) just visible under the water, and the colour of the mountains in the bg, stunning.
The portrait comp really works for me as well.
A great shot Paul, thanks for posting.

Hi Paul!
To me, this is one of those rare photographs on this site that make most of us look like rank amateurs.
This is the perfection of photography as an art form. So I will desist from flinging cliches at it.
Thanks for sharing this gem with us.
Deep regards.

Nice light and colour... for a hurried shot you did very well Paul.

Everything is perfect. The wide-angle is perfectly well controlled and so the exposure (did you use a a ND grad?).
Nothing to add.

Bonsoir Paul,

Excellente photo,j'aime bien l'effet qu'a donné le longue exposition dans leau et le merveilleux éclairage sur les montagne au loin. Félicitation pour cette belle composition très agréable à regarder.

Merci pour l'envoie!

A gorgeous scene, Paul.
The light of the setting sun on the mountains is warm and beautiful, a striking balance to the cool mysterious gray of the foreground. Another contrast is the crisp details on the snow-capped peaks and the soft blurriness of the rocks under water created by the long exposure. Then... the strong, shiny, sharp big rocks that stand out from the running water. A brilliant composition. TFS. : )

Hi Paul,
excitingly strong depth.
Beautiful colour contrast of warm yellow and red spots against prevalent chilly blues.
Delightfully silent landscape - not a trace of panic to be felt.
Very instructive notes, well told.
Thanks and regards,
Peter

Hi Paul,
A very good landscape shot. Excellent composition in the portrait mode. Great use of the rocks in the foreground. The long exposure has really added a beautiful effect to the water.
Scott

Beautiful shot, Paul!!!

Hi Paul, you really are growing landscape wings :). This is a lovely shot. I like the muted foreground against the strong colours of the BG and the rocks in the foreground give a great sense of perspective. Lovely details and composition. Great stuff :)

Hi Paul,
a wonderful landscape, love the diagonals and zigzag compositional elements. Also the repetition of the "two humps" motive with the two mountains(BG)/two stones (MG)/two knobs in the stone (FG).
Wonderful colours, the warm/cold contrast brings them really out.
Regards,
Gabi

Stunning capture of a beautiful landscape. The wide angle lens give it a mystical appearance. Well done, Paul!

February in the Lakes - not a time to miss. Knowing the road you will have had to drive to get to this spot, I can only imagine you were praying that you didn't meet too many people coming in the other direction.

Fantastic shot, missed going there this year - usually camp either a tad further up the lake, or over at Seathwaite on the otherside. Good access to excellent scenery.

Fantastic angle, and composition. All that panic paid off - can only guess that there was a graduated filter in there as well? Light round there is very trickey and it is all too easy to end up underexposed on the rocks...
