Hi Paul,
I really admire what you have done with this image.
As you mentioned, there are inherent difficulties in the black and white juxtaposition, but your exposure here is briliant. You have managed to capture a wide range of values on the black plumage, as well as great details on the white beak and legs. The layer of water on top of the sand or mud is well rendered as well, exposing the shallowness in subtle color changes.
I love the pose and POV too. TFS this fantastic capture. : )

Wonderful capture Paul. This is indeed a difficult bird to get right having details in the dark plumage and not at the same time burn the white beak totally. But you managed it perfect of course - what else could we expect;-). The pose is excellent - most of the time you just see them on the water. Excellent sharpness with so many details all over - even the little white dot in front of the bird which I would have cloned out;-). Perfect composition and very natural colours. A great capture.

The pose of this coot is outstanding and the POV couldn't have been better. Perfect details, lovely reflection, great colours and overall, superb shot! Though maybe that brown in the right corner... :) I'm glad you didn't remove it.

Hi Paul, great shot. Nice pose from the coot and very well exposed with excellent detail. Great reflection off the ice. I am always amazed how big their feet are. My only slight niggle would be the brown in the top right makes it look a bit like the light is shining out of his backside, otherwise perfect. TFS.

Hi Paul,

Excellent capture. Very good pose and composition. Sharp details and well done on DOF & POV. These birds are so unbelievably aggressive towards eachother. The other day, I was driving by car and two coots chased eachother and came on the road doing that. I had to break and stop (there where no other cars) as they had no eye for me and my car. Idiots! :) Well done & TFS!

Hello Paul! This is the best photo of a coot that I have ever seen--and I've seen a good many! You have so deftly managed to put the focus on the head and face instead of the enormous legs and feet which is all one usually notices. Love the flow of the photograph and how the eye follows down the back to the focal point where the ice reflects. Great capture--very impressive! Linda

I still have no decent photo of a coot. They are a real test for ones exposure abilities. Fill Flash??? Fantastic capture Paul, if not the best one of the best coot photos I have seen. I think its the first time I have seen their feet as well.

A fantastic shot. The exposure is spot on for both the black and whites of the Coot. Excellent eye contact with a small catchlight. Nice pose to as he bends to drink from the ice. Tack sharp with perfect clarity. Top shot MF! :-)

Hi Paul, I think this one is a beauty. I love that low POV. Did you use an angle finder or do you just have a flexible back? Fantastic exposure, Coots can be tricky in that respect but you've got it spot on. Did you use exposure compensation and what was your ISO? Beautiful composition and lighting too. Very nicely done :)

Hi Paul

What a great shot, I have just posted a shot of a Coot and was unhappy about losing the red of the eye so decided to check some other shots out, this one is perfection, fabulous pose and a great POV, superb details, the colours are excellent the white beak and cap, the black feather's and Ruby Red eye are perfect and I too love the deep blue tones of the ice.
