Meles meles - the badger belongs to the mustelids though unlike martens and polecats treads on the whole of it's sole when walking and leaves distinctive footprints in wet soil or snow. It has feet equipped with strong claws which it uses for digging long complicated underground passages to form a sett. It feeds on small rodents, loves earthworms and slugs but also eats carrion, birds eggs, seeds and berries (and in our back garden is partial to a sausage roll or two and peanuts covered in honey!) The badger has been unjustly persued by hunters and baiters so much that today in the UK it is legally protected.

When midnight comes a host of dogs and men
Go out and track the badger to his den
And put a sack within the hole and lye
Till the old grunting badger passes by..(John Clare)

I have been truly amazed by these animals since they moved into our garden, from their loud snuffling (which announces their presence) reminiscent of pigs to their acute sense of hearing (breathe out too far and they'll hear you) but almost no sight, they are amazing creatures and I feel blessed to have them so close.
It's not a technically great photo but it's life!

They are elusive critters to capture. This is a very nice photo of one you got. Great note too. Thanx for sharing.

Interesante imagen Jax, aunque un poco pequeña... se podria apreciar mejor el animal con una presentacion de mayor tamaño.
Colores naturales y buena perspectiva.
Notas ilustrativas.
Bien hecho.
Me atreví a realizar un trabajo... espero sea de tu agrado.

Interesting image Jax, although a little small... could be appreciated better the animal with a presentation of greater size.
Natural colors and good perspective.
illustrative notes.
Well done.
I dared to make a workshop... I hope you like it.

Nice one of this badger, they are not easy to get. Lucky you to have them in the garden.

Interesting notes and a very good capture! Badgers here in Canada are flatter and wider and are known to be ferocious in battle. Yours seems a milder species. Good shine to the coat, clear detail of the seemingly bristly fur. Great natural shot!
