This was part of a huge colony of aphids that I found. almost every stem on the plant was covered in them. Unlike most insects they don't tend to move much which provided an ideal opportunity to use a tripod to aid focusing.
Commonly known as greenfly they increase their rate of reproduction through a process called parthenogenesis in which the aphid can be born with fully developed embryos already inside (thus bypassing the need for mating). These virgin births can themselves contain additional developed embryos resulting in a rapid rate of reproduction. |
