[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This was one of those event where you didn't know what you were exactly looking at, at the time and I have only just found out what it was.

What caught my attention at the time - other than a very nice sunset, was the fact that there was 2 reflections of the sunset in the loch. At the time, I had no idea why, but it caught my attention and since then, I have found out that it was a sunset mirage.

Sunset mirages, two or more images of the sun, are seen when its low slanting rays are unusually refracted between air layers of different temperature.

Usually the air temperature falls smoothly with increasing height. The most we then see is a slightly flattened sun. A mirage needs more severe temperature variations.

One class of mirages, M-Mir sunsets, occur when there is a temperature inversion – warm air overlays cooler layers.

The sunset at left was produced by a temperature inversion. The cooler air trapped below the inversion is visible as the darker layer.

Sometimes there are several inversion layers and we see the sun miraged into multiple pancake-like shapes.

Another sunset mirage form, Jules Verne called it an “Etruscan vase”, occurs when the sun-warmed afternoon sea produces an abnormally hot air layer immediately above its surface.

Miraged suns often presage the elusive green flash!

I have done absolutley nothing to this picture other than convert it from RAW and resize. Colours etc are exactly as they were and NO filters were used at all.

Please enjoy and feel educated. I certainly have been trying to establish why there was an extra refelction. I hadn't noticed the 'waistline' in the setting sun when I took the photo - but I was being eaten alive my midge and clegs at the time.

Oh and why F5.6 - I could not stand still for long enough to set up and tripod and need something that would capture the setting sun without camera shake and a tripod... or me being the evening meal for too many flying insects.

The landscape of Scotland definitely has a different look to Ireland and I cant wait to revisit maybe next year. I think you caught such beautiful light in this capture Emma and again with strange phenomena. I love the tranquility of this peaceful scene, it makes me want to pack-up my camping gear and travel again. Very fine work mf.

Hi Emma,
This has also been a reason of some of the UFO sightings, but then the sun was hidden behind a hill and the reflection was seen in the cloud layer just above the hill. I've never seen it before and I am glad you came up with a photo of it. Tjee, now you have shown me two natural phenomals within a week. What is next? Bigfoot?? :-)
This is really a beautiful photo and so well exposed. You probably set your camera to under exposure. The shallow DOF gave it actually great contrast between the sunlight and the rest of the scenery.

Well isn't that intersting...and aside from the science lesson the photo is really nice too. The grasses and their reflections in the water add a nice touch.
