Another visitor this morning, this is an Oak bush-Cricket. This one made her way into the house and tried to blend in with a Jade plant (Crassula ovata), but I saw her. She sat while I got off a few shots, before she decided that being outside was a better option.

Oak bush-cricket - Meconema thalassinum - Family: Meconematidae

Oak bush-cricket - Meconema thalassinum
The small, pale green or yellow-green oak bush-crickets become active after dark and are around as adults from late July to the autumn frosts. The female lays eggs singly in bark and these hatch the following June.

Oak bush crickets live exclusively in the foliage of trees including, but not only, oaks. Only capable of weak flight, oak bush-crickets are often attracted to outdoor lights where they are most often seen in gardens, being difficult to spot in trees. However, egg-laying females can sometimes be picked out with a torch in the late evening. They do not produce a song but males make bursts of almost inaudible sound by drumming on leaves. They are common in the south and midlands, but are absent from the north.

Food
Predatory on other invertebrates on tree foliage.

Plants
Pedunculate oak, Sessile oak

Prey
Aphids, Bugs, Froghoppers and leafhoppers

Thanks for looking, have a great weekend.

Saludos... Ricardo

A very tight DOF that allows only the body of the insect in focus, unfocused the paws and antennas smoothly.
Excellent composition my friend with pleasant tones and a background very well achieved.
The sharpness in the so small eyes is astonishing... I like it.

Very nice shot! This is how you see them, hiding in the greenery and you have not cut off his long antennae which is easy to do! Excellent composition, very sharp and good colours.
TFS, Ulla

excellent green-on-green shot, alan! :-)
superb composition with wonderful colors and great sharpness,
just the big blurry leaf on the right is slightly distracting.
terrific job & take care, thorsten.

Alan,
Good capture. Focus is on the insect.
Compo is well done ...

Beauty Alan. Well composed. Classic liquidsunshine soft light and subdued colors. IMHO the top left has more contrast and draws my eye away from the subject, so a crop, dodge, contrast reduction, whatever, might help keep the viewers' eyes on the cricket.

Hi Alan,
normaly I don't like those hoppers - but this arrangement is wonderful. So sharp and with wonderful light. In Italy when I walked in a flower-field there were hundreds of hoppers - it wasn't funny to walk there, brrrr.
Thanks for your shot, it's wonderful

Nice "sauterelle" in a pleasant environment. The composition works well and the sharpness is good on the insect. I like also the soft colors. Useful note.
Bravo my friend.

Very sharp and clear image of this apparently small creature. The colour appears to me to be quite natural.
Your well written note gives a lucid picture of this insect's life.
Thanks for sharing it.

Hello Alan

A very nice shot of this cricket.I hear it is good luck to have a cricket in the house.Great DOF and POV.A nice composition with sharp details.TFS

Rob

Hello Alan, great sharpness in this small cricket.
Lovely compo, details and usefull notes.

Andrea

Hi Alan,
Wow! I like this composition and details. This is an excellent macro and I like also the fact that it is really green on green but we can cleary see the insect. Well done and TFS,
Claudine

Hello Alan!
Looking at the leaf of the plant supporting the cricket one can tell easily how narrow DOF is in a shot like this. Yet, you nailed the focus right where it's supposed to be and thanks to large aperture blurred the leaf directly behind the subject's head. Good job. Congratulations,
Mark

Really superb macro, Alan. Lovely composition, muted colours and excellent sharpness.
DOF is very pleasing as well. Quite deep considering the aperture.
Were you at whipsnace on Saturday (23rd) by any chance? I saw someone with what looked like a 20D but with a canon 70-200 2.8 as well as a long sigma. Looked a bit like you :)

Hi Alan
This is a great macro of the lovely cricket with amazing detail throughout its body where it matters. Excellent sharpness gives us a good view of this critters body markings and features.
The composition is perfect and the POV placed the insect nicely on the diagonal line. The colours are splendid, the shallow DOF rendered the BG well OOF, and the exposure was perfectly managed. Even with the fill-in flash you managed to capture some very soft light on the subject.
Very good work and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hello Alan,
Very well done with an artistic flair that puts this one a cut above :)
Sharpness, detail, DOF, color, exposure...it's all good ;)

Hello Alain,
Very nice use of light. Interesting POV and composition. I know this species very well. It comes to my room from the nearby trees every summer.
