Another from the Archives. This is from Woburn safari park in July.

Lion Tamer
wo unemployed guys are talking. One says, "I'm going to become a lion tamer."
The other replies, "That's crazy, you don't know nothing about no lion taming."
"Yes I do!"
"Well, OK, answer me this. When one of those lions comes at you all roaring and biting, what you gonna do?"
"Well, then I take that big chair they all carry, and I stick it in his face until he backs down."
"Well, what if the lion takes that big paw, and hooks the chair with them big claws, and throws that chair out of the cage? What do you do then?"
"Well, then I takes that whip they all carry, and I whip him and whip him until he backs down."
"Well, what if that lion bites that whip with his big teeth, and bites it in two? What you gonna do then?"
"Well, then I take that gun they all carry, and I shoot him."
"Well, what if that gun doesn't work? What will you do then?"
"Well, then I pick up some of the sh*t that's on the bottom of the cage, and I throw it in his eyes, and I run out of
the cage."
"Well, what if there ain't no sh*t in the bottom of the cage? What you gonna do then?"
"Well, that's dumb. Cause if that lion comes at me, and he throws the chair out of the cage, and he bites the whip in two, and my gun don't work, there's going to be some sh*t on the bottom of that cage, you can bet on that."

Coloration:
Light tawny, with white on abdomen and inner side of legs; back of ears black; mane of male tawny through reddish-brown to black. Coat of immature animals has a rosette pattern which fades as they mature, although vestiges may remain in lower abdomen and legs of adults.

BEHAVIOR:
Live in social groups called "prides," which generally consist of 4 -12 related adult females, their offspring and 1 - 6 adult males. Members may be scattered in several groups within a pride's range in groups called "companionships" or "sub prides." Females do most of the hunting. Females and young eat first, followed by males. Hunting may be night or day.

ADAPTATION:
Color blends with habitat. The lion is a typical cat in overall structural adaptations. Extra heavy bone in skull and limbs coupled with team hunting allows the taking of extremely large prey.

STATUS: The lion is the only "big cat" (the roaring cats) not endangered at this time.

GENERAL INFORMATION:
Females rear their young together and will suckle cubs other than their own. Like many cats, lionesses head-butt in greeting

Two in the same day for me...

I like it a lot: composition, POV, DOF, focus, color, framing, background, lighting.

I like it: sharpness... something I should criticize ;-)

Excellent capture, indeed.
Best regards... Ricardo

Hi Alan

Great shot, I lkie your composition and pose it really captures the Lion's typical laid back relaxed look, I can imagine him on the African savannah resting under a Tree while the girls go hunting, nicre sharp detail and great colours too.

Just from the thumnail this is clearly a liquidsunshine shot. Your favorite subject (a really beautiful critter by the way) rendered in soft liquidsunshine light. Well done!
Mike

Hi Alan,
Thanks for the funny note :)
Although as your title suggests, this particular lion looks more concerned with getting his afternoon nap than chasing a lion tamer around ;)
A nice capture, you have presented it well. Good composition, sharpness and exposure.
TFS!
Mike

Splendid capture!
A perfect POV, great colors, light and compo!
Great notes too :)

:)))))))))))))))))))))
What a great "story"!!!
Excellent shot, Alan!
He does look a bit old and tired. And those wounds at his eye really show that he didn't have easy life.
Excellent POV, lovely natural colors and super sharp details.
Also, very well framed and composed.
Very nicely done, my friend!

Bravo and TFS

What did the lion say when he saw two hunters in a jeep?
Meals on Wheels!

That's all these fellows do at a Zoo, lie down and sleep and then walk a bit and lie down and sleep some more.
Very natural, real shot of the lion Alan, at least he knows to rest in the shade here!
Have a good week!
Janice

Ha, ha.... good one Alan! Great looking King you have posted here. e has his mane swept back, is this the Elvis look? Nice work. Great to see a post from you. Take care my friend!

Hi Alan,
Good picture.
I wonder how it would be if the window was open, don't you?

LOL, that is a completely ridiculous joke! How have you been? Haven't heard hide nor hair from you in a long time! Great capture of this magnificent beast although he could use some zoom whitening on those fangs!

Alli

Hi Alan
Great portrait of the lion, the colour and the composition very well.
