Fly Agaric (Amanita muscaria)

The Fly Agaric has to be the quintessential toadstool, named after its former use as a preparation for killing flies. It also has a place in myth and legend for its supposed use by the Vikings; by boiling it up and drinking the milk before going into battle!
The cap which averages 8cm in diameter, is a brilliant red and usually covered with white spots and flecks, which are the remains of the veil; the white spots are quite often lost after heavy rain, with the colour washing out of the cap also leaving it a more orange colour. The gills are white and free, the stem is also white with a ring. It is common and widespread within Britain and northern central Europe. Grows predominantly in association with birch on heath and woodland, it appears from August to November.

you found such a perfect specimen of this fungus and posted it to TN in an even perfect way. Admirable sharpness and light as well as a nice point of view (did you dig a whole to get access from the underside?).

How low can you go ;) Exposure, DOF and composition are all terrific - it's hard to make an exceptional image of this much-photographed species, but this is great. A lot of work and thought must have gone into this, particularly with that POV - well done.
