Knots! Lots of them.

This was taken at Snettisham this morning. Quite a spectacle seeing 10s of thousands of Knot. We started off on the beach just before 6 am to watch the huge flocks of knot coming inland at a very high tide. The sounds of thousands of wings beating together is amazing. We moved on to one of the hides to see the congregated Knot, Oystercatchers, Redshank and others. The Knot, in their grey winter plumage huddled together, from a distance look like gravel and when they move on masse it's like watching a fluid.

I converted this to B&W as I think it has more impact that way, I'm not sure how the quality will turn out as I had to save this as Jpeg quality 4 to get it below 200 kB.

The saddest part of the experience was seeing one knot clearly injured and covered in blood. It was still walking with apparent ease but a damaged wing meant it would come crashing down on attempts to fly. Curiously, when this injured bird approached the masses of other Knots they got spooked and would not go near it, eventually they got so spooked they took off. The injured one tried to follow but came crashing down again.

I hope you like it.

Ricardo

An impressive image Paul of this heap of birds... never I have seen something like that so tight.
Excellent for the unusual thing and for the idea of presenting it in B&W, although it would be good a Workshop with a version in color for to also enjoy her.
My best regards... Ricardo

Wow what a shot I can't belive how many there are and all so tight together, I was watching Autumnwatch tonight and apparantly you count the legs and divide by 2, only joking. It is an amazing shot, I like the B&W as it very effective, superb POV.

Hi Paul,
What a scenery. Never seen that many next to each other. Must have been really noisy and maybe even smelly. Great idea to convert it to B/W, since it has a lot of impact.

Niek

Hi Paul,
Very artistic composition. The conversion to B&W is perfect for this shot. Great shot! I am sure that is just an amazing sight to witness in person. I bet this would look great in a large format print!
Scott

Amazibg sight. I have seen only flamingoes in flocks of this size. The B&W works well and you created an unusual but impressive textures and patterns photo. Well done, Paul.

Hello Paul
Nice shot, you need an extreme depth of field for shots like this and you've done it well. An interesting and eye-catching image. I tried to do something similar on the Farne Islands with the Guillemots but didn't get the result I wanted.
Cheers,
Adrian

Hello Paul!
Excellent multiplication effect.B&W works perfect here.
Best greetings,

Hello Paul,
Very mesmerizing image!
It looks so unreal and the B&W makes it even more strange. I can't even imagine how 10s of thousands of Knot look like but I would say that picture gives a very clear idea. Excellent and very unusuall.
Superb work!

Paul, this is indeed an impressive image. Yeah, B&W works well.

I can almost "listen" to them.

Sorry about the injured one.

This is a really cool patterned effect Paul, all the details are crisp, I am surprised that this did not get more attention from the viewers. I love it. :)
