Taken very early one summer morning.

Reviewing some previous shots I looked up the river and saw a lone swan - instinct or expectation - I put the camera back into shoot mode and changed lenses to my 80 -200.

The swan performed to perfection, 'flying' my way to join others upstream - in fact he never took off completely covering the whole 2-300 metre stretch by fly walking across the water. I was so happy to see this and to capture it after missing an earlier opportunity with two others - just being in the right place at the right time.

The reflection in the right hand part of the image is of a semi-derelict industrial area - the river and canal scapes which run through the city of Leicester are endlessly fascinating to me.

Hi Kev,
What a stunning action photo. Great tight composition and a perfect POV. The reflection is superb. You did get some nois on the belly of the swan, but nothing major. The lighting in this photo is perfect.

bonjour kev
joli cliché et belle action.
l'avantage avec les cygnes c'est que leur envol est assez laborieux et permet de reagir a temps.

Hi Kev,
This is a great combination of action, framing, composition and POV.
You have done very well to freeze the motion and capture it at the perfect moment. The reflection is amazing. Superb capture! Perfectly seen and executed.
TFS!
Mike

the reflection makes this...different
you show the effort required to lift off this heavy body from a flat surface..the wingtips hitting the water show the power and effort
good shot
cheers

I can see why you'd be thrilled with that capture, Kev. It was hard to discern what it was from the thumbnail but the fullsized image is a happy surprise. Sounds like you are pretty quick at changings lenses! I've missed more shots because I just can't react fast enough. This is super and the reflection and water splash is grand!

Hi Kev,

Superb action shot, great composition and the pose is excellent and shows off the massive wingspan, nice detail especially with the lighting catching the water splashes. I can imagine how happy you were too catch this shot as I fail all the time, I think the Swans do it on purpose as I always hear them taking off as I leave the pond.

you're not kidding when you say right place right time! This pic is fantastic. I've always hoped to get a shot like this...you've captured it very well. the clarity of the swan and it's reflection are great, the angle and the timing of the shot are dead on. Stunning photo!

Light and a shadow Splendid decisive moment and great using shutter speed!
I like this shot very much,Best wishes, kona

Magnificent seems to be the best way to describe this shot at first glance. Wingtips just touching the water. the arch of the wings, the dark water, the splashes frozen in time, the composition, all great! If I were to be really critical I'd say the head is out of focus, but it's still really good. If it wasn't for that, this could win you a competition!

wow, what an amazing capture, kev! :-)
well composed and perfectly frozen action showing the
"fly-walking" impressive swan wonderfully mirrored on the
dark river with all the water splashing around.
superb job & take care, thorsten.

Wow, a fantastic shot, you have really captured the momnet. The reflection of the swan in the water really makes the picture.
