I came across a little cluster of these last Saturday whilst in a very old part of the New Forest. Mostly found underneath Birch or Pine, these are a posionous species with hallucinogenic effects. They are also known as the Sacred Mushrooms and are of great significance in folklore in many parts of Europe and it is easy to see why.
They can grow up to 20cm high with a cap up to 15cm wide, which i think is pretty impressive!
To me they have always been the typical mushroom of cartoons or kids drawings, and it was a pleasure to take the time to stop and look at one in greater detail and depth than usual.
i don't usually dabble in macro photography but i can see why a lot of people do! |

Potentially a nice shot, good camera angle, but perhaps a little too much saturation and a little overexposed on the stem. I would have removed the grass in front of the camera and used a small reflector on the right to bounce light under the cap. This would allow you to also reduce the exposure-f/stop and to keep the stem properly exposed.

Hi Paul,
Nice photo. This mushroom is great, just a pity the grass in front of it. I like very much the bright colours.
