I know this much...it's an oak leaf and it's moss. Now, I'm pretty sure it's a red oak - but which one. I'm not too hot on mosses either. Any help with either ID would be very welcomed.

I've been after a shot of this moss for a long time but I've not seen a nice enough specimen until this day. There was a huge area growing on a steep bank which has resulted in a long stemmed carpet. Even better was that a red oak tree stood over this and some leaves lay scattered. I picked this leaf and placed it in position and cleared off some other bits of leaves.

I'm quite pleased with the results. I used a polarising filter and set up some shade to reduce the glare from the leaf.

I hope you like it.

I've given up using points so feel free to comment, critique, leave points or don't leave points - it's completely up to you!

(PS. The quality has suffered a little as it's a very busy image so I had to save at Jpeg quality level 5)

Hi Paul,
fascinating image with very rich details, showing a microcosm of moos looking like a dense green forest with a giant red object landed on top. Crisp and clear details, and a most delightful contrast of subtle colours of moss and the exotic - probably Japanese - oak leaf. Aesthetically very pleasing artistic composition.
With thanks, and best regards,
Peter

It looks like a giant leave sitting atop a dwarfed conifer forest! Fun. Color saturation and sharpness are really good. TFS

Hi Paul,
I really like the contrast between the oak leaf and the moss. There is so much detail in the shot even thou it appears at first s basic photo.
Nice result,
regards
Matt.

Hi Paul,

Beautiful capture and composition and colors.

Two subjects competing for attention. Both subjects on their own are worthy. I feel in this case, that the leaf is the main subject, therefore, a tighter crop would increase the composition value, perhaps a square crop.?

The moss is another subject, I hope you captured it on it's own. The texture has the appearance as though one is in a plane and viewing the tree tops of evergreen trees.

Nicely done.

Mike

Hi Paul

The moss looks very attractive. I must admit I have always liked the shapes and colours of moss but have never taken a photo - this looks great against the contrasting colours and textures. Simple but very attractive composition.

Hello Paul,
What a detailed and so well composed picture. I like it a lot. You had a very good POV and those colors are stunning. Well done and TFS,
Claudine

very very good shot

Love the pattern effect of the moss with the offset random feeling of the oak leaf. The exposure is dynamite with great color appeal. :)

Hi Paul,
A really creative and excellent idea. The composition makes nature a kind of art. I love the details in the moss and the position of the leaf. I just feel that the moss has a kind of blue color tone. By adjusting the blue tone in the curves, the color of the moss looks better.
TFS,
Niek

Good to see image like this one from time to time. Simply idea and great realisation. Very good composition, leaf looks like boat, or maybe rather member of rock band sailing on hands of crowd during performace :-) I can't help with ID but this is quite common moss in Poland, it likes wet areas of forests.

I love this. It is so "John Shaw" I don't want to label your style but it makes me think of his work. The CPL filter worked well. Great shot Paul.

Original composición. Los contrastes entre los colores son fabulosos, me gusta mucho esta imagen, Felicidades, JL.

Hi Paul.
I liked very much this capture, I think you managed the lights perfectly to bring out the shape and textures of the moss in an unique way. It is very arty, well done and happy new year, MF.
