Taken at the Fossil Forest near Lulworth this afternoon. These strange rock formations are scattered around randomly on the top of a barren cliff top that is more more like the lunar surface, but is typical of the variety of strange rocks and ancient seacapes that make up the Jurrasic Coastline.

The fossil forest is famously exposed on a ledge part way down the cliffs just east of Lulworth Cove. It is also seen in several places on Portland and a number of other sites inland from Weymouth
Throughout the Jurassic period of geological time, Dorset lay under a tropical sea in which a thick accumulation of clays, sandstones and limestones formed. However, near the end of the Jurassic, sea levels dropped and the recently deposited Portland Limestone became exposed to form low-lying land. Soils developed and trees grew but they were short lived as the waters rose again to flood the forest under a salty lagoon. Algae then grew across the floor of the lagoon and around the base of the trees and its sticky surface allowed layer after layer of mud to accumulate. The mud hardened into a thin limestone band with doughnut shaped structures known as burrs where the trees once stood; the fossil forest.

I remember visiting this place many years ago when I was at school taking A Level Geology. Wonderful place. I love this picture. The fossil tree in the FG looks great. Excellent POV

Hi Paul,
Lovely photo of a very interesting subject! I really like the POV, which gives excellent depth to the photo. Nice colours, textures and natural tones. I've looked through your gallery and it's really interesting, a lot of the places in the UK look similar to certain places in Australia. For example: Old Harry Rocks remind me of the 12 Apostles, certain scenes look a bit like the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Durdle Door reminds me of the Arch (on Great Ocean Road), your picture of Sty Head Tarn reminds me of the Australian Alps with it tarns and glacial lakes, and we even have a Devil's Kitchen as well :) I notice though that the landscapes in the UK are a lot greener. Thanks for sharing,

i like the way you have shot this picture so low, giving the fossil all the attention, leading the eye up to the rugged cliffs.
i keep expecting to see a caveman!!
