Calidris minuta

No, the title is not a lazy man's work ethic it's the name of a tiny wading bird.

They weigh on average around 30 g. They breed in thae artic tundra, we get to see them in the UK on their passage to Africa where they spend the winter. More often than not they are found feeding with Dunlin and that was the case here too. I saw about 4 Little Stint amongst a similar number of Dunlin.

The Little Stint diet consists of insects and small crustaceans and molluscs and can be found feeding along edges of lakes and reservoirs where there is some exposed mud, they are also fond of brackish pools and estuaries.

The main time to see this species in the UK is August to September.

I hope you like it.

Hello Paul,
What a cute shot! You had great timing to catch him with its little leg up. I really like those details, POV, colors and composition. This is very well done and amusing. My best wishes and thanks,
Claudine

Hello Paul
Graet shot, great refection and excellent colors and details.

Wishing a Happy Holiday Season and a Bright and Healthy New Year for You and your family.

Thank You for everything on this one

Hi Paul,
I have just come back from a walk along a marshland, where I saw a number of similar small sandpipers feeding on the edge of the water on the mudflats. I was just thinking how hard it was to take shots of them and make them stand out, because they do blend so well with their environment.
Well, you certainly showed me that with skills such as yours, you can make the seemingly impossible happen.
This little stint is presented with absolutely exquiste details and colors, and it pops out against the water, even though the water is also brownish.
How do you do it???
Great pose, great reflection, and great catchlight in the eye.
Congratulations and TFS. : )

Hey Paul,

Nicely done, excellent shot, nice tones, interesting comp, excellent details.
Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Hello Paul,
It's so amusing this scene! It seems like the bird is marching or something like this.
I like a lot this ambiguous effect of the ground, or water, with reflections but at the same time with color of sand. Well done!
The foto is so well exposed and focused.
It deserves all the time spent laying to cath this, the POV is so low and so good at the same time.
The vertical composition works pretty well, and the frame is so plain and clean as the scene ask for. I like a lot!.
Congratulations and thanks for share,
JM

I adore this photograph and I admire the talent of the photographer behind it. It expresses so well what this site is all about! The precense of the bird the perfect crop and the beautiful background makes this a nearly perfect photo for me....

If English were my native language I could perhaps express this in another and better way! Fantastic!

Hi Paul

What a wonderful and cute capture!
This little bird (with a very interesting and funny name ;) ) seems to be very carefull where its steping :)
I really like the low POV here and the lovely perspective it gave you. It's impressive that you managed to get a very decent reflection despite the little rocks in the water. I also like the interesting "shape" of the water behind the little bird - there appears to be small torrent that you caught very well, too.
The vertical composition works like a charm, the exposure is impecable and the DOF is perfect.
What can i say...brilliant work, my friend! One can really learn a lot from your photos.

Bravo and TFS

Hi Paul,
I have tried for some years now to get as good a shot as this of this little wader and I'm still hoping to succeed.
This has all the right attributes, plus great pose and reflection in the wet sand.
You may not care about points but some of us like to confirm our appreciation!
TFS,
Ivan

Perfectos reflejos en esta imagen tan entrañable. Buenos colores y estupendo encuadre así como la presentación.
Un saludo, JL.

Hi Paul,
I see my question on how you do it is already answered. Not something I would prever, so al respect of your patience. Even more respect for the awesome result. You got a stunning pose, a perfect DOF and excellent details. A nice tidy BG with an overall pleasant color tone. Looks like the bird moved his leg just a tad too fast for your shutter speed.

Niek

Hi Paul

I love the pose - it looks like it is stepping delicately across the wet ground. Excellent timing with the leg extended like that. I love the brown tones here and the great POV. Excellent light and I love the vertical composition

I saw your forum post on the Seals workshop. It looks great. I can't wait to see your photos from that trip

bel oiseau, les couleurs sont légères, bien différentiées. Thomas

Hello Paul,
Lovely shot! Don't really know why, but seems to be very much in your style. I like the portrait framing very much, clear BG and warm colours also work great.
It seems you didn't have much light to play with but despite that picture have great quality. A little blurred leg gives impression of motion. I really like that as well as the reflection in FG.
Lovely work!
