Callicera spinolae

| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Shot a whole roll of film to get this, I can see why in wildlife photography digital caught on so quick.
This is Callicera spinolae (Golden hoverfly, is its english name here) a very rare hoverfly all over its range. It pupates and hatches in early autumn to take advantage of the ivy flowers with their rich source of necter.
The larvae develope in rot holes in the heart wood of trees that are full of water, but they must not have to many leaves in that make it smell of rotten eggs, they don't like that.
Therefore veteran trees, old parklands and wood pasture with lots of ivy are excellant places to maybe find this species. Wimpole has had a number of sitings and this is where I photographed this one. |
