[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Elater ferrugineus is a very rare click beetle that breeds in trees with cavities that birds use, like owls and jackdaws. The larvae feed on the rich nitrogen source of the dung etc and possibly other larvae. Adults can live as long as one month and maybe longer, while larvae can take as long as four years before they pupate. Loss of habitat of old veteran trees and old growth woods and forests are a threat to this beetle and the other invertebrates that also require this habitat. Although in England it can be found in old villages and parks like Wimpole where trees have been lopped or cut for fire wood. Trees like the pollarded one in my gallery.
It is RDB1, red data book endangered. I have also put another image in the workshop of a variation which has a black head. (not an Ampedeus)

Nice macro Simon I like the detail and DOF some background areas where the highlight looks a little overexposed but the beetle is perfect well done TFS rgds Necip.

Hello Simon.
Very nice shot of this threatened species, great details and brilliant colour. Turning him diagonally would make it an even more attractive photograph.
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Nice and instructive pair of macro Simon with great colors and good sharpness.

I like it a lot: composition, DOF, focus, sharpness, colors, lighting, notes and workshop.

I like it: POV, framing, background.

I don't like it: nothing to grumble.

An interesting double presentation of these showy beetles.
My best wishes for the 2007... Ricardo

Lovely colours and a nice POV on this bug. Good details on the beetle and a great note

Hello Simon,
clear and sharp, very well documenting shots of these beautiful rare beetles under difficult light conditions. At the "original version" I might recommend to try some cropping of the rather turbulent blurred background on top in order to add concentration on the beetle.
The image in the workshop presenting a rare variation definitely deserves to be shown on its own, not only for showing a very rare insect, but also because it is well made and well composed as an image, well concentrating in the subject.
Thank you for these valuable contributions.
With best regards,
Peter
