Stunning this capture of the bird.
You got a close approach, and the bird seems to be confident with your presence.
I like a lot details on feathers, their colors and texture, and specially on the gorgeous yellow eye.
DOF works great with that soft blurred background.
Good composition and frame used.

Hi Pieter

I see you are still treating us with some of your excellent shots from you fabulous holiday. This is an absolutely brilliant portrait shot of the thick knee, “dikkop” in Afrikaans which translates to ‘thick head’. The prime feature of course is that amazingly lively eye.

Your composition is very well compiled, the colours are natural and just great, the details are stunning brought on by the optimal DOF which incidentally also aided the BG since it is perfectly OOF and extremely complimentary of the subject. And finally, you did a splendid job with the lighting on this bird.

Excellent portrait hereof Thick-knee.Brown bird on brown background,but very well managed.Very well adjusted DOF does pretty insulation main subject from OOF BG.Background is nice alight.Details and colours on bird are excellent,primarily me like his eye.Nicely composed with good POV and good frame.

Hello Pieter,
Thanks for this very nice portrait of a bird extremely rare in Poland. Since many years there are no more than 5 pairs breeding in Poland.

Once, in 1993, I was very lucky to see this amazing bird in central Poland. Soon after it appeared to be its new breeding place!

Concerning the photo, I like the rusty colours - well matching BG with the bird. Great deatils on plumage too.

I remember what difficulties you had with sharpening of this one, feathers are always difficult to get balanced between not sharp enough, sharp enough and too sharp. This still looks about as sharp as it was at full size even after size reduction. The eye is fantastic, of course!
