Hi guys,

Here is a example of a female tufted duck (Thanks for ID Paul). It was taken in Richmond Park last week. She's quite pretty and was just gliding along towards the bank, and realising I had a good chance I got as low as possible to meet her head on with the 180mm. Came out nicely with just a crop and sharpening.

Identification:
The male Tufted Duck is distinctively all-black apart from his immaculately neat white flanks, yellow eye and grey bill. The female is mostly chocolate-brown, darker than the Pochard and with a slightly paler area on the flanks, similar in outline to the same patch on the male. She usually shows at least the beginnings of a tuft at the back of the head. In flight, Tufteds have very dark wings with a broad white bar across the flight feathers.

Habitat:
Breeds on reed-fringed lakes and slow-moving rivers. Winters on lakes, reservoirs, and estuaries.

Distribution:
Reasonably common as a breeding bird, although absent from north-west Scotland, south-west England and Wales. In winter very common and widespread on inland stretches of water.

bonjour Simon,
très bon portrait, le canard est si figé que l'on dirait un leurre de chasseur.
Superbe détails du plumage, joli oeil jaune.

Hello Simon

A super portrait of this tufted duck.Absolutely love the beautiful detail in the eye and great eye contact. The low POV and DOF are very well done. The details are sharp and the reflection in the water is a lovely touch.TFS

It is a good one, Simon.
Why? You could say: this is an ordinary duck. More or less.
However the point of view is fascinating. A front view. So... to get everything sharp - at least what has to be sharp- you need a certain depth of field. At the same time you need a high shutter speed so that your image isn't blurred. You managed very well. It results in an extraordinary compo with a lot of depth.

Marked details Simon due to the exact focus and the great captured sharpness.

I like it a lot: composition, POV, DOF, focus, sharpness, color, lighting, background, framing and notes.

I don't like it: nothing to grumble.

Suitable very low point of view capturing the serene posture of the bird and their reflection.
Thank you and greetings... Ricardo
