I was watching some Mallards shuffling about on a small boat dock on The Thames at Windsor the other day. When these three suddenly stopped moving, I snapped this shot, thinking the composition might work. The river is running high and fast right now, and it looks like the ducks are waiting for more favorable conditions before they dive in. It was a very dull, overcast day, the water was muddy so the colors, other than the ducks, are drab.

As always, any hints, tips or criticizms that can be offered are welcome. I am new at this and am curious if I could have done something different to improve this photo.

From Wikipedia: The Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), also known as the wild duck, is a dabbling duck which breeds throughout the temperate and sub-tropical areas of North America, Europe and Asia. Probably the best-known of all ducks, it gave rise to most domestic ducks, apart from the Muscovy Duck.

The breeding male is unmistakable with a green head, black rear end and a blue speculum edged with white, prominent in flight or at rest. Males also possess a yellow bill with a black tip, females dark brown.

The female Mallard is light brown like most female dabbling ducks. It can be distinguished from other ducks by the distinctive speculum. In non-breeding (eclipse) plumage, the drake looks more like the female.

If, perchance, you are just dying to know more about this common duck, then go to the Wikipedia site, there is extensive information, some of it quite interesting.

This is a nice pic.
The diagonal composition is very pleasant and the eye follows through quite easily. The repetition effect is nice es well.
The colors make for a nice contrast with the river and dock.
The feather details are good.
There is nothing I would have done to this picture other than arrange the ducks by hand :).
Congratulations!

Finns what a scenario! So many possibilities come to mind. She is difinitely looking at him suggestively. Now what do you think she means by that expression. The day before Valentine's you said. Maybe encouraging him to ask for a date? Or do you think their relationship has already proceeded further than that? A proposal of marriage? But look at him he is more interested in the water, hmm testing the waters? maybe they are an old couple, maybe she is looking at him to ask him so shall we then take the plunge, or you first or I. What I wonder is the story of that pudgy one on the side. A disappointed suitor? Quite disgruntled, could be an old guy and his gout is troubling him. But for an old guy there is quite a dangerous glint in the eys.
It is the look you caught... One could go on and on about it and the fun is that as we will never really know we need not stop the train of imagination. Hehe thanks for a well taken highly entertaining picture. Brilliant capture!

Hello Michele,
Very nice capture of malards.I liked vivid colors, clear details and composition a lot.I think left one is waiting on her wive:)Have a nice day!
TFS..:-)

The indecisive moment of the mallards is well depicted here, Michele.
The muddy water of the river provides apt contrast to these colorful birds.
Great POV (I like the diagonal placement of subjects across the frame), colors and details.
Thanks for dropping by and leaving your kind critique on my new picture.
Best regards.
Ram

Hello Michele,
have you ever played that "game" where you put things in lil balloons above the subject(s) in a photo ... like a cartoon.

Here is my content/thought for what the female says: "What do you mean with 'HE has fleas' ?" ... Etc.

Excellent compo. I am missing the blue on the leftmost mallard. Tfs, Jay - a Canuck in Canuckland [ sometimes duckland ].
