I hope I've got the ID right and this isn't some hybrid. I get easily confused and orchids confuse me easily.

This is a (to the best of my knowledge) an Early Purple Orchid Orchis mascula.

The first thing i noticed about getting very close to these flowers is the smell. When newly opened they smell sweet like honey but upon pollination they smell very strongly on tom cat's urine, it really is unpleasant.

This flower grows in a wide variety of habitats on neutral or chalky soils, they do well at the margins of broadleaved woodland. It also grows on chalky grassland and coastal cliffs.

It flowers from April to July dependant on location.

Colours are slightly off, I posted in the wrong colourspace.

I hope you like it.

I've don't use points anymore so feel free to comment, critique, leave points or don't leave points - it's completely up to you!

bonjour Paul,
une image d'un grand esthétisme, le mouvement suggéré en arrière plan est très bien associé à la rigidité de ces fleurs. Couleurs bien opposées. bravo

Hello Paul,
I like pastel colors and smooth texture in this picture. This is a simple composition with superb BG and details. Your notes are interesting too. Some flowers could be so surprising by they unusual smell. Those flowers look very delicate and fragile. Nature could be so contrasted…Thanks,
Claudine

Hello Paul,
Orchids are not easy to photograph well, partly because of the colour and partly because they are an awkward long shape. The colour looks right to me (they are now in flower in Sweden) and you seem to have set them in an artistic misty green setting. This can't be just camera work: one wonders what the pp treatment was to achieve this?
TFS,
Regards, Ivan

Hi Paul
It's GREAT to see you again here!

What a splendid shot of these very beautiful orchids!
I'm amazed by the clearance you managed to get here, both in the FG as well as the BG...they stand out so nicely and the rest is so wonderfully blurred!
The colors are great (even though you mentioned that they were off), the focus is impeccable and the shapness of the details is impressive!
Superb composition!

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Hi Paul,

Very artistically shown Paul. The orchids look so dainty and remind me of mother and daughter standing side-by-side. I love the colours and DOF too. Well done
Janice

Hi Paul,
Now I am wondering how the colors would look when you used the different colorspace. To me the colors look really natural. It is just amazing that you found these standing all alone, or atleast that is how it looks like since I do not see any purple spots in the BG. I love the artistic look of the composition.
TFS,
Niek

Hello Paul,
I have always thought that this is one of the most obvious ways of photographing orchids ;-)
But saying that I also think it seems to be the best one. You really can appreciate the beauty of the flowers when there's nothing to disturb in the frame.
I know it takes a lot of work to set it up correctly and get that feeling of flowers floating in the green. I will just say that this picture is an example of a perfect result.
Excellent job!

Belle photo de ces deux fleurs très nette et du reste flou, Extra simplement. Amitiés Thomas
