Wild Rose: Rosa canina, native to Europe, northwest Africa and western Asia, was used in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to treat the bite of rabid dogs, giving rise to the name "dog rose."

The rose has been a symbol of love since before Roman times. In the classical mythology, the rose grew from the blood of Adonis as a sign of re-birth and love beyond death. Later it was adapted for Christianity as a symbol of the blood of Christ, representing heavenly love.

As a "queen of flowers" the rose also stands for Mary, the Queen of Heaven in the Roman Catholic tradition and therefore also virginity and innocence. In medieval times the five-leafed rose was also considered a symbol of man's five senses. Since Greek and Roman times it also symbolizes secrecy and confidences (the term "sub-rosa", under the rose, i.e. in confidence, stems from the painted roses that were common on the ceilings of Roman banquet halls, evolving into the carved roses on Roman Catholic confessional boxes).

This particular rose was found growing wild in an abandoned strip of land alongside a busy railway station, a small patch of wild that time had forgotten and that provided a moment of sweet scent in an otherwise hectic world.

Thanks for looking and have a sweet-scented day

Hello Silke,
Good exposure and focus in pov!
Nice colour with clarity and details on your captured!
very well done and thanks for sharing
cheers
Tony

Thank you, Silke. I have always wondered why it was called a dog rose!

Dog seems a pretty inappropriate name to give this flower which looks so beautiful!

I love your positioning of the rose and the lovely sharp detail which reveals its textures so well! Lovely soft shades of colour!

kind regards,
Bev :-)

Your notes add so much to the picture. There is a inner beauty beyond what we see in flowers. And a rich history as well...Very nicely composed in picture as well as notes...
Bob

Beautiful rose, and good to see a wild one on TN. And Ivan calls it a Dog Rose. We have many growing in the wild on farmland, roses that were originally brought to NZ by the early settlers who haven't stayed on the land. I must try and find some this summer.
