Wheat-stem Borer's (I hope) Cephus pygmaeus
Family Cephidae. These small insects approximately 8mm long. They are one of several very similar, cylindrical saw flies.

They carry 2-5 yellowish bands on the abdomen, yellow legs and long antennae. They are abundant on grassland and include cereal crops during May-July.

The larvae cause considerable damage by boring into the stems of plants. Adults are common on composite flowers. This is a pair of wasp "mating" in a buttercup. The weather was extremely bright and warm with still dry air. This enabled natural light to be used to get this image.

ISO 100
Shutter speed 1/60
f/8

Shot in RAW, no flash, mirror lock, remote shutter, manual focus, hand held. The only PP work involved was cropping and sizing and slight sharpening.

I hope to get more insects now the weather has improved and give the macro flowers a bit of a rest.
